"I was thinking about getting off on demand, but it sounds like I should be glad that I didn't"
I'm so sorry. Healthy thoughts his way. Did they say why they think he has the pneumonia?
Physical exam and X-ray. He has a progressive neurological disease, looks similar to ALS. He's unable to move and is on a breathing machine 24/7, somewhat like a bipap.
I'm sorry to hear this. I work with patients suffering from MS, ALS, and other neurological diseases. I asked because people can end up with pneumonia for different reasons, and I specialize in evaluating safety with eating/drinking. briefly, food/liquid heading "down the wrong pipe" (i.e. into the airway) can be one cause of pneumonia. there are specific x-ray and clinical findings that would point your docs to this as a potential issue. if your doctors had any question about swallow function, they could ask for a swallow evaluation from speech pathology to rule out aspiration (food/liquid going into the airway instead of the esophagus) and to see if there are any compensations or diet modifications to prevent aspiration/aspiration pneumonia. sometimes that's all it takes to help individuals suffering from recurrent pneumonia.
I wasn't sure whether to keep my big mouth shut, because it sounds like your father has a wonderful team and is good hands (and if I recall correctly, your husband is an MD). but I thought that if my friend in real life were talking about her dad I'd at least gently probe to make sure all bases are covered. I hope this wasn't too much.

I'm sorry your dad is going through this ordeal. My mom has had a trach for a couple of years now, if you have any questions, let me know. Ts&Ps to you, your dad and your whole family.
