Ok, I've searched and read basically every WWYW thread on here, and I still can't decide what, if anything, I need to add to my running wardrobe as we head into winter.
I've gone for a number of mid-30's runs so far and have been fairly comfy in tights (or capris), a short sleeved wicking shirt, a long sleeved quarter zip from Costco, and a thin fleece jacket that only stays on for the first half mile or so and then gets tied around my waist. I am perfectly toasty in that once I get moving.
I also have gloves and an earwarmer handband thing, but they've never stayed on for much longer than the jacket.
I'm worried about runs down into the 20's and teens. (which apparently is going to start with my run tomorrow morning since the low is 19) And I'm worried about wind and/or precipitation combined with cold.
As it gets colder obviously I could leave the jacket on. But it's just thin fleece and wind just goes right through it. But I've got two layers under it, so maybe I'll be fine? And I own two long sleeved warm base layer type tops. And I own some REALLY warm pants. So my ass is probably covered.
Do I need a jacket with some wind resistance? Are there jackets out there that won't just make me feel like I'm running in my own personal sauna? I tried wearing my hiking rain jacket (which is designed to breath supposedly) on a rainy run a few weeks ago and ended up soaked from my own sweat after 1.5 miles. So no on that, but that's an actual rain jacket, not just a mildly water resistant kind of thing.
I do not have regular access to a treadmill. So if I'm going to stick with this half training for Charleston I need to be able to run in pretty much anything. somebody hold my hand and tell me it'll all be ok as long as I have [insert magic clothing item here]. I live in Maryland, so while we get our fair share of shitty windy, sleety days we do not (usually) have like Maine or Michigan cold as balls, feet and feet of snow type weather.
I'd consider a beanie and a buff/gaiter for your neck, and yes, you'll want something that stops wind for your torso. Vests can be good for keeping warm w/o overheating.
I only wear jackets if it is really, really cold. I usually find the long sleeved compression/fleece shirts are sufficient for keeping me warm. I picked up a random rain running jacket from TJ Maxx and that's what I wear when it's like below 20-25 or something. It's lightweight enough so I'm not sweating like crazy. But it does usually end up around my waste.
I'm a minimalist when it comes to gear. So I usually try to make due with what I have.
I've run in 0 and a tad lower, and i run very warm . I wear a vest if needed, over the quarter zip. I second the gaiter or buff.... I've used mine as a hat, for my face, on my neck, and they are easy to take off when not needed.
I'd also consider some warm socks... I wear knee highs in the cold under my tights, keeps legs warm too.
When it gets below 20-something, I layer a cold gear top with a Under Armour zip up storm jacket. It does the trick. I will say that I love love love my Under Armour storm zip up. I wear it over another long sleeved top and it blocks wind AND keeps me warm down into the single digits.

Wool socks, a beanie and a balaclava/neck buff are a must. My balaclava is super light weight and used more for catching dripping snot and/or putting over my mouth when it is a super low temp.
I personally have a Nike running jacket that I love. It is more a wind breaker but it cuts down on the wind as well as being water resistant. It has vent so I don't die of sweat. I would invest in one.
I'd suggest smart wool socks, water resistant/proof jacket, and maybe some thermal tights (fleece lined tights).
I'm in DC. We get a lot of rain/wintry mix disgustingness. I'm glad to have my jacket for that. The thermal tights are good when it's below 20 and probably the warmest pant you really need here. In the unlikely event the temperature drops below 10 it doesn't stay down there for long dropsy

Oh yeah, I was thinking about that during my run yesterday. What do you guys do when the snot really start running? Do you just wipe it on your sleeve? Carry something? Snork it back and spit?
Please don't say the last, because I can't - I gag when I try to do that.

I either wipe it on my sleeve or my neck buff. Needless to say, both get washed OFTEN. lol
I trained through the last few winters in Maryland and it doesn't get too bad. I am usually fine with layers. On the coldest days I wear a LS tech shirt, a half zip or full zip over that, and a fleece vest (it's not tech or anything, but with the layers it seems to work) On the bottom, regular tights work best. I have a pair of fleece lined ones and it usually only gets cold enough a couple days for those. I have gloves and a head band that covers my ears. In precipitation I add a hat with a brim. Usually when it gets cold here we get a break after a couple days.

I usually wipe it on my gloves or sleeve. Sometimes, I put a kleenex in my pocket, but that is almost more trouble than it is worth. Usually I'll take my gloves off after the first mile or so. I'll tuck one away in a pocket or in my waistband and then use the other one as a hanky.

I've yet to find the perfect jacket that you describe. I have a couple that are cute and block the wind, but they aren't great for super cold weather. I have one that is warmerer, but like you mentioned it is too damn hot.
Truthfully, I usually just tweak my workouts in the winter on day's like today. (I imagine your weather is close to mine, 46, cold, and windy.) The rest of the week looks pretty nice, so I'm going to wait to run till later in the week. If it was snowing I'd have no problem running outside, but days like today aren't my favorite.

Cold and rainy are the worst. I can handle snow, but if it's cold like 30s and raining, I go for the TM. So fucking happy that today's weather did NOT happen yesterday. I would have cried.

I bought a Brooks Silver Bullet jacket on the recommendation of someone here. It was 12 today when I went out and I wore a long sleeve under armour cold gear shirt under the jacket, with an ear warmer headband (I have sensitive to wind ears), gloves and a gaiter. I needed the ear warmer head band, gloves and the gaiter, but I could have probably worn a tank or short sleeve shirt under the jacket. Or maybe just the long sleeve shirt. I got pretty warm barely a half mile in. This is my first time using the Under Armour cold gear stuff so I wasn't sure how warm it would keep me but it works!
I wore my regular Balega socks and I think I will have to get warmer socks - my toes were cold for awhile.

I bought the Brooks Silver Bullet jacket on the recommendation of someone from this board and wore it today for the first time. It was 12 degrees this morning and pretty windy when I went out. It kept me VERY warm! I had a long sleeve shirt on underneath it and probably could have done with a short sleeve or even a tank.
I can't remember who told me about it but THANK YOU! LOL
Well I finally had a legitimately cold as balls run this morning. According to my thermostat it was 18 degrees when I headed out the door at 5 AM.
I wore the super warm pants I've had for ages and never actually used for running, a short sleeve thin shirt, a long sleeve underarmorish shirt that was a handmeover from MH (it was his when he was in crew when he was 19. Too small now. Fits me ok.), a wool hat, gloves and my thin fleece jacket.
I ended up taking the jacket off and on and about 3 times. My back got REALLY sweaty, but my front kept getting cold. After I got home I realized that was because my shirt rode up and my poor belly only had one thin layer on it. It was BRIGHT red. MH's shirt isn't quite as long as I'd like. The pants were just ok - they're not tights, so I kept getting wafts of cold air on my calves. Knee socks would fix this.
Otherwise the only problems I had were that my ass skin went numb (which is typical - my fatty areas always get cold on the surface) and my chin/neck area was so cold it hurt for the first mile or so. I was running down the street with my gloved hands over the bottom of my face like a crazy person.
So yeah...a buff or balaclava or something. Good call. And if I pick up a jacket/vest of some sort I want something that will breath well across the back I think. But basically I'll call 4 miles in 18 degrees without wanting to die a success! I don't need to shell out $$$$ on tons of new gear! Yay!
Nice job! I am hoping the last 2 days are not indicative of the kind of Winter we will have . I'm still crossing my fingers for mild :/
hey, it's supposed to go back up to the high 60s/low 70s next week! I'm going to have to start going outside to check the temp in my robe before I get dressed for my runs because I never know what it's doing. I'm still dreading when the wintry mix starts.
I spent a good chunk of yesterday perusing craigslist for cheap used treadmills. I think we're going to take an outing to Dicks or something to test out as many brands/models as we know what we like.
