Help. I'm trying to arrange our dang living area for Christmas with the new furniture and I'm stuck, so I'm crying uncle. What do you think of this layout?
The mysterious looking things in the left room are a bookcase and my desk. The dark brown thing in that room is the entertainment center/tv stand. The mysterious looking reddish thing in the right room is a curio cabinet R inherited from his grandma. All these things are to scale.
Things which cannot be moved (at the moment): the Christmas tree, the curio cabinet, and the tv stand/entertainment center. The piano *can* be moved, but only along that same wall, and R would "rather not".
What about moving the writing table to the other side of the door or on the wall behind the chairs? Separate the chairs and move one closer to the sofa.
Does the coffee table float in the middle of the room so far from the sofa?

It looks closer IRL, I think because the sofa reclines (and is therefore set farther out from the wall than I have it showing, plus there needs to be room for the sofa leg rests). I can move the coffee table to the room on the right though, if you think that would help.
I think the second layout is better. I know you said they aren't moving, but I think the piano and curio cabinet would look better if they swapped places.

I think so too. But the curio cabinet is a family piece and we live in earthquake country. It's strapped to the wall there, so it cannot move/be moved without a LOT of fuss.
Where is the kitchen in relation to this room? Do you generally lounge in the room on the left with the tv or the one on the right? Would you enjoy having your desk in the same room as the Christmas tree or does it not really matter to you?

Kitchen is through the door on the far left. I don't usually use that desk for work. I will while the ILs are here, but I have a bigger better desk upstairs in the guest room normally. That desk is for correspondence, mostly.
ETA: we generally hang out near the tv, even if we're not watching it, because until now, we didn't have nice chairs in the living room.
Is that your dining table? Do you use it? Do you need the 2nd couch?
Teccccchnically, it's a kitchen table, but it's the only table we have. It's a family piece, totally wrong for the house, and I absolutely adore it. We do use it pretty regularly.
We just bought the 2nd sofa, LOL. The 1st one is really two recliners with a cupholder "wedge" piece that goes in-between and we use that for TV watching. The 2nd one is prettier and more "decorative." Someday we'll have 3 rooms into which to put all this furniture and things will get better (R has to build our shed first), but until then ... yeah.
I like the idea of getting the dining table into the room closest to the kitchen, and keeping the chairs with the couch in the formal living room. I'm not loving the bookcase/desk positioning, though, and it's throwing me off.

Oh, I love the couch/chairs thing there! Sadly, R would haaaaaaaate it. (He already hates playing "concerts" when his parents are here and would feel so very on-display.) I wonder if I can talk him into it, though?
Also, the end tables probably can't be pushed together like that. They look like this IRL and are quite tall (around 24"), which I don't think will work in that configuation (or will it?):
Hmm... they definitely won't look as good as I was hoping, lol. What about this? It blocks the tree a little, but it gets the chairs facing each other instead of the piano and it gives you room for the end tables next to the other couch. Can you get away without a coffee table in front of the tv couch because it has the cupholder wedge?
