My husband's dream is to have a recliner in the t.v. room, but we don't really have space for a recliner and the couch. Are there any couches with built-in recliners that AREN'T hideously ugly? I told him that once the dog is trained maybe we could replace our couch, but then I looked at the La-Z-Boy site and...just, no.

in that situation I would tell my DH that it was time to let his dream die. hahahaha. Though through this pregnancy I would have killed for a big ugly recliner in my family room.
I don't understand why this is the case...I guess because the back cushion has to be attached? It seems to me that you could make just a regular-looking sofa recline, but I guess not. :-(

In my mind, that makes all kinds of sense. But for some reason, I've never seen that. They are all big, poufy and remind me of the 90s.
our sectional from la-z-boy has built in recliner on both ends and I LOVE it. It's a microfiber material and it's not big/bulky. We've had it about 6 years and it's held up great.

My ILs just bought a set of La-Z-Boy sofas with recliners on both sofas. They were $$$ (pretty good leather material) and are not the most attractive sofas I've seen, but you really don't notice how unattractive they are when you are relaxing on one of them lol.

Correct. They're all hideous. (so sayeth the owner of a spectacularly hideous reclining sectional)
If they can make a good looking high-leg reclining chair, I don't understand why a good-looking reclining sofa is so hard. The closest I've seen is the Jenna from La-Z-Boy.
I have no idea if they are comfortable, but I have seen some more modern/contemporary style sofas that are recliners that don't look like recliners. They are probably pricey italian ones, since everything that I find that I like seems to be pricey and Italian-lol), but maybe not since people seem to be wanting comfort and style and the market seems to be responding.

La-z-boy is on my shit list lately...
We bought a recliner on 11/11, picked it up on 11/15 and it's already broken! We sat in it all of 3 times. The back part that you push back manually to recline the back won't return to it's normal upright position. And of course now that we own it, the sales people aren't interested in helping us so we have to wait 'a couple of days' for the service department to contact us.
Oh and then there's the whole price issue, but that's a longer story that we have no recourse on.

My husband too and I am giving in! I have been home recovering from surgery and realized the sofa we currently have isn't very comfortable. We went shopping this week for a sofa with two recliners.I am going to get leather because we have an old recliner now that is cloth. The headrest is dirty on the cloth and we really haven't used it that much. I found two possibilities. One is a Natuzzi and the other is from La Z Boy. The La Z Boy is called Reese. The one from lay z boy is better quality but not as modern looking. So I think I am going to go with the Natuzzi. It is in the showroom as a sectional but can be ordered as a sofa. (Wait time is 3-4 months!) first pic is Lay Z Boy second is Natuzzi. My style is more modern and these were the best I could find.

That is terrible! And unacceptable! Hope you are able to straighten it out!
I chose a huge leather recliner for my work anniversary gift. I couldn't find anything else in the catalog options I was given to choose from. I love that thing, it is big and takes up a lot of room but I really love it.
Honestly, I get wanting things to look nice, but don't you think feeling nice is good too? And in a TV room? Not a hill I'd die on. We have a hand me down recliner in our TV room. It's easier for H's grandpa to get in and out of when he visits. His comfort is more important than how it looks, and he comes maybe once a month.
IMHO every man deserves a chair that he is comfortable in. I pick the fabric and color and decorate around it.

I think you can have both form and function. Everyone deserves comfort, but I don't think you should have to work around something that you think is ugly or is not your style. If you really hate the way something looks, it is the elephant in the room....it becomes all you see. Pretty fabric is not going to change that.
It is worth it to me to spend the time (and money if necessary, even if it means waiting or living extra frugally) to find something that works for everyone. I get that other people don't feel as strongly as I do about it. I just feel like people look at our home as an expression of my artistic skills and as a reflection of our interests and our taste. I just don't see an ugly recliner as furthering either of those things.
I am in the process of looking for a power lift chair/recliner for my Mom (for her house) that fits her needs and her style. It is hard, but there are some out there that are not too bad. I know that she would be fine with anything, but having one that was not big and ugly would help her feel a bit more special and not feel so resigned or like an invalid.
I'm not getting the hate here. Yes there are some really ugly recliners out there but there are some nice ones that more closely resemble upright chairs. My grandmother is 93 and has a La Z Boy. It is nice looking, but more importantly, it is comfortable to her.
I'm with alf17. A man deserves a comfortable chair. My DH would love one and as soon as we can afford it I plan to surprise him with one.

I agree that there are some nice ones, although it is much more difficult to find the sofa recliners that are nice looking than the chairs, and that is what OP was asking about.
I just see a lot of ugly recliners in homes irl, with people kind of apologizing for them, saying that comfort is important, as if you can't have both. I really think a lot of people don't realize that there are nice looking recliners that are comfortable, so they don't look.

Yes, to clarify -- it's mostly the big puffs on the back and the squodgey arms that I don't like. Thanks for suggesting the leather ones, I actually like the look of some of those a lot better than fabric. I just don't understand why the double-puff back and squodgey arm seems to be a requirement for a reclining sofa. Maybe to have enough "give" to recline? I was hoping to find a reclining sofa with just a plain back cushion and a more structured arm. I don't think the ones I was looking at were hideous, just NMS and the NMS parts didn't seem to be related to the reclining functionality.

Feeling good is nice, but it's not like our regular sofa is uncomfortable. And we live in a small house, so our t.v. room is our primary living room space. :-)

I like both of these! I was hoping to avoid leather just because the room is very light and beachy (white painted paneling, yellow and grey accents), but maybe I'll go with something leather anyway.

That's what I don't get...so many of the recliners are really nice looking and look just like regular chairs, so why are the sofas with built-in recliners on the end not?
I don't know if I like the phrase "every man deserves" blah blah blah. I mean, we would all like a comfortable place to sit. And I also think it is easy to lose sight on the whole compromise thing. It's your H's house too, and if he wants a freaking la z boy, I think you need to consider/compromise.
I tend to railroad my H on paint colors sometimes. He laughed at me the other day when I asked what he wanted. I think in decorating other rooms, I've had a vision. In the upcoming rooms, I have no vision because we don't have a budget for new furniture etc. tbh, the one room is gonna be a toy room for the foreseeable future, I suspect. Lol.
Fwiw, my H thinks that regular recliners are ugly.
He wanted a comfortable chair in the house, possibly a recliner, but more for whoever wanted/needed it than a 'my chair' kind of thing. He had no idea that there were nice looking recliners out there until we actually started looking at furniture for this house. Once he saw the variety of styles he was more than willing to look for one that worked with our style, so it wasn't like it was a compromise for either of us.
We found one that he thought was as comfortable or even more comfortable than the traditional ones that he had tried out. The bonus is that we found a chair that fits both of us and we both love how it looks in our home.

Luckily the service manager called today and is sending someone on Wednesday ... supposedly it's just some wing nuts that need adjusting, but I'm not convinced.

Yeah - that's where I'm at too. I love a comfortable couch and I love recliners, but I HATE the overstuffed smooshy look that LZB sectionals seem to have. However, the next time we buy furniture I not only want it to be a sectional with reclining sections but also a built in sleeper. From what I can tell ALL of those are ugly .
