Brought on by the firing squad thread: Punishing murderers by murdering them makes as much sense as teaching kids not to hit by spanking them. Do I understand the urge? Yep. Doesn't mean it's logical or a good solution to the problem.
My UO as long as you have absolute proof I have no problem with it other than it costs so much. In think if you take a life then you don't get one either. That being said I don't believe in the death penalty the American way.

I am so glad parents are not in our school classrooms teaching or working with small groups. Nothing against you CNA but Mandy used to post about it too. Why are parents who aren't teachers teaching?
I'm the first to admit the system is broken and I have no solution. But it's not committing the same crime we're punishing. Especially when our court system is so fucked up and so many innocent people have been legally "proven" guilty. I mean unless we want to start teaching our kids in school that if little Johnny breaks your pencil, you can go break his too and start functioning that way.
Heh. That type of society might force people to stop driving like assholes though...
Like I said as long as we have absolute proof I am all for it. The alternative is ridiculous. Lock them up for life? Why? That accomplished nothing.

This is pretty much where I'm at.
Same here. And I really don't understand how it is costing so much. I can clue them in on a few cheaper ways to get the job done...I mean really...
I am going through a phase where I don't feel bad for anyone. Everyone around me is complaining about money, boyfriends, jobs...blah blah blah.. And I'm just like "oh well...you made your bed, you made your choices"
I feel like a total bitch but come on already. I can't deal with listening to people complain when they have no intention of actually making ANY CHANGES.

Um yep the people who do mass shootings. Absolute proof
Like I said, it almost never exists. Those are prevalent in the media lately but still a tiny percentage of the crimes committed that result in the death penalty.
And the entire thing becomes even more convoluted when you consider mental health as a factor.
But they do exist and when they do I am totally fine with killing a killer.

Their bell work is going over stuff they should already know. I just helped with things like I forgot where the apostrophe goes. I spent a good deal of my time doing things like putting stickers on folders, sharpening pencils, and putting together the bits and pieces for the Thanksgiving bulletin board (I volunteered). I guess I could have clarified but what I posted sounded more dramatic.

But the system we have in place that allows the death penalty doesn't require absolute anything. Even if it did, I would still oppose the death penalty but I can see why someone else might not.
Obviously you did not read what I wrote. I said in our system now I am not okay with it for that reason, however with absolute proof I have no issue with it. You claimed it never makes sense I disagree.

There are some crimes (mass killings or child rape come to mind) where the horror of the crime makes the criminal no longer human in my eyes. I know this isn't our system at all and that our system is broken but when that type of horrible criminal is put to death, I think of it less as a punishment for a crime and more as getting rid of a terrible problem.
In the real world where humans run things, I am anti death penalty. But I do think certain people could be burned alive or dropped off a cliff for all I care and I would actually find a little pleasure in knowing they were sent out of this world in a manor similar to what they did to someone else.
I am opposed to the death penalty. I believe that an eye for an eye does in fact make the whole world blind. I am also of the opinion of Kimbus that state sanctioned murder makes no sense.

I read somewhere that we are spending more money housing prison inmates than we (the royal we) spend on our children's education. The amount of money that goes to housing a life sentence is absolutely mind boggling.
Well I have difficulty getting past "You killed someone. That is against the law. So now the law says we can kill you." on a basic level. The hypocrisy as legislation aspect.
And I'd personally rather be killed quickly than spend my life in prison so if I were a mass murderer and got caught, I'd have been committing my crimes in a death penalty state on purpose because for me personally, that's the easier punishment.
And the fact that there's currently a large risk of killing innocent people because our justice system is fucked.
So it's the hypocrisy? I am perfectly fine being a hypocrite when it comes to murder.

It costs more to give someone the death penalty than a life sentence.

I'd also add that prisons are pretty much one of the biggest political boondoggles going. Where they go, who runs them, who gets contracts to supply them -- it's all at the very best extremely political and worst completely corrupt.
No prisoner is sitting in the lap of luxury while kids don't have text books. Politicans are awarding inflated prison supply contracts to supporters though.

If we had absolute proof and it didn't cost more to sentence someone to the death penalty than it does to lock them up for life, I would be all for the death penalty. Comparing it to pencils or driving is absurd. I'm pretty sure you will live if someone breaks your pencil or hits you. I don't believe it would be so hard to teach children that murdering another human being is different than being annoying.

That is just gross but I get it. Of course the politicians have prisons in their back pocket.

It's not like I think they're actually comparable. I was using extreme examples as an attempt to make my point more clear.
I wouldn't spank my kid while telling him "We do not hit!". For me, the death penalty is the same basic idea on a much larger scale. Emotionally I can see why it appeals to people. But I don't want to legislate based on emotion.
I don't think I'm explaining myself well. Between Mallory crying, Joey coughing and DH snoring, I was up 5 times between midnight and 7am. I think I need more coffee to be coherent.
Nope spanking and killing someone is not even close. To me it appeals to me more logically than emotionally.
