Our little son was born a week overdue (10/31 due date) on November 6. 8 lbs, 19".
He's wonderful, a voracious feeder and has already gained a pound at his 2 week bday!
Water broke after intercourse the evening prior and came gushing out (I thought the prostaglandins would stimulate contractions not necessarily break my water!). 19 hr labor including 1 hr pushing. Had the epidural even though I hoped not to (it took some of the edge off but I still felt pressure with every contraction and some pain and definitely felt the pressure and felt the midwife's hands guiding where to push). I shook violently from head to toe from the time my water broke until he was delivered. I couldn't stop shaking, not even after epidural, so I lost energy and strength very quickly and was 90% effaced, but only 3-4 cm dialated when I asked for the epi 8 hrs in. The epi did not slow my labor or contractions thank goodness.
I had to be on fetal monitoring the entire time because our son's heartrate dropped w every contraction and they were concerned about that, so they had me changing positions a lot during labor to try to take pressure off the umbilical cord. When his head emerged, the cord was wrapped so tight around his neck they had to cut it immediately. I got to tummy time very very quickly and spent 2 blissful hours with him on my chest after delivery. He fed after 45 minutes.
Pushing was hard and the pressure was painful (like having a big old poop stuck halfway out-- sorry!), but it was satisfying because I could feel progress with each push. DH and the nurse and midwife were awesome. I'm so lucky.
We're exhausted. Not sleeping hardly at all and my breasts are very engorged-- over-producing and over-letdown (enough to feed entire neighborhood says lactation consultant), so we're on a new feed regiment as of yesterday.
Good luck to all of you ladies out there!!! Thanks for all your support these long 9+ months!
I shook too during labor and my husband was offering to get me blankets, but I wasn't cold. I did it too with my first labor. It's so bizarre to not be able to control something like that.
