too bad thift stores are getting savvy about designers and they won't sell those in the store. they usually list them on their websites as an auction item. Occassionally i have seen a designer item or two in a glass case but for definite marked up prices.
I was just discussing with co-workers that the Goodwill in the wealthy part of time is apparently a gold mine. I don't know why this didn't occur to me before.

My sister has made a nice buck for herself scouring goodwill shops, buying higher end stuff, and re-selling it on eBay. Its amazing what's out there if you know what to look for.
There was a really great Goodwill in Calabasas when I was in college. All the donations from Malibu ended up there. I cursed my stupid giant feet whenever I went.
I asked why she didn't sell them on eBay or something, and she said it was too much work.
I am all for a penny saved is a penny earned, but at some threshold of earning it's gotta be ridiculous to spend your time doing this. My friend lives in a $1.2 million waterfront home, just bought the lot next door to hers for $350,000 in cash, has a $250k boat. And she is on our facebook garage sale sites selling her kids old toys. Like $10 here and there is just not going to make or break her. WTF is she running all over town to meet people to do this. I don't understand!

There's a mom at my kids' preschool. They are not hurting for money at all. She goes shopping while the kids are in school and buys stuff on sale and then turns around and sells it on ebay. She makes no less than 2k a month doing so.

Because you want the proceeds to do good and don't want to deal with the process of selling them so you're willing to take the tax deduction rather than selling them on your own? Designer shoes don't resell for that much (the one I donate to tends to be chock full o' ratty old Guccis at $50 a pair) so it isn't like she's necessarily walking away from that much money per pair.
I've donated designer shoes to thrift shops, and I would imagine I am less well off than your friend. Shrug.

See I am legit almost poor so this is something I should do!. IDK to me the joy of having money is that it buys you time...to not have to do stuff like schlep your kids' old stuff around in the car driving to meet people at time and places convenient for them lol. I have lots and lots and lots of less money than her so it's people like me who should be doing this haha. I don't judge, different strokes and all that
I live near a lot of retirement communities: 90% of the women's cloths at my local Goodwill looks like it was worn by the cast of the Golden Girls. It's great for trying out refashioning projects, but it's totally depressing if you're just trying to find a garment you can wear "as is" though.
Seriously, I actually found this exact same dress at my Goodwill a few months ago and it didn't look "out of place" among everything else on the racks.
ETA: link to the refashion project the blogger did with the "before" dress

Did she buy two dresses because I am having a hard time figuring out how she got the after from just the before...
