Hi I'm Nicole. Living in the frigid Minnesota. I've lost weight, started to run and did pretty well for awhile. Don't the color run the last three years and actually did my first real timed 5k this fall. Currently I've gotten lazy and am trying to remotivate myself.
I'm curious as to those living in states that are snowy and cold, what do you wear when you run outside? Thanks!
Snowy/cold runs require layers, not necessarily thick items. My coldest runs (down to about 5 degrees F) include:
Fleece lined tights Knee high socks, wool Base layer (tight fitting, long sleeve, high neck top) Half-zip long sleeve, preferably with thumb holes Windbreaker Gloves with mitten slip-over Hat that covers my ears Neck gaiter/scarf of some kind
Oh and guts.
Below 5 I'm about done. But that's very few days a year here.
Welcome. I live in Montana so I've got my cold weather outfit down to a science now! lol I wear:
Ear warmer/hat Gaiter to protect my face if its windy or super cold Base layer - long sleeved cold weather shirt Outer layer - Infrared long sleeved jacket (mine is Under Armour but it works amazingly well against cold and wind) Gloves Cold weather tights/pants Long socks Yaktraks if there is snow on the ground

I don't have any cold weather gear advice since I would likely die in the temps you and others have to deal with in the winter. You guys have more guts than I could ever dream of having.
Welcome!! I'm a lifetime Minnesotan, and there are several other MN gals here too.
I'm similar to the above comments. I wear a base layer and fleece or jacket on top with tights, and possibly a second layer of pants if it's below zero territory. I like a fleece headband or hat, mittens, and then a fleece neck gaiter if the cold is enough to sting your face.
Normally I run outside pretty consistently all winter. But... I actually haven't gotten outside since the snow last week. I'm taking a few easy weeks after my fall races and trying to re-charge. I've also done a few short runs on the treadmill. For me I do a balancing act on indoor/outdoor running so I don't get too burned out by the cold or the treadmill.
So you have any winter or spring races planned yet?
I wanted to do the turkey trot but the early snow scared me a bit. For sure i plan on doing the Stillwater log run in the fall and hoping get lucky 5k and monster dash at least!
I make sure I live in the Southeast! It gets cold here but not as cold as Montana!
I agree that layers are the key. That way you can take the top layer off if you get too hot while running. You want to be a little cool (not freezing cold) when you start because you will warm up.
