Woke up to mine making funny sounds this morning and realized freezer was dead and everything thawed. Last time this happened, the repair guy said it was only a matter of time before we needed a new one.
So, if you have bought a refrigerator lately, do you love it? Other that Subzero and the like, what's considered a high-end brand? I've never had to buy a refrigerator before.
are you looking for a high-end fridge, specifically?
I have a Samsung french-door refrigerator. I love it. It has a huge capacity, like 26 cubic feet or something. It's probably solidly middle-class in price range.
Maybe, I'm not sure. We have a high end stove so it would be nice to have a high end fridge if I can find a good deal. Luckily, this seems to be a good week to have a broken fridge...lots of sales. I've heard good things about Samsungs but I was just reading reviews on one that seems to be really loud.
We have GE Monogram fridge and other appliances (we bought our house from the people who built it, and they liked things fancy). I do like it a lot. One problem with the "high end" thing is that only GE can repair it when things go wrong. The compressor stopped working this summer and we just had to live with a fridge that didn't work -- for 5 days until the GE certified repair person could come out to look at it, and then another 3 days until he got the part in to fix it.
Good point. I had kind of hoped that when we redo our kitchen in a few years that we would go with GE Monogram or Viking to match our stove, but now that the expense has come up unexpectedly, I just can't stomach the thought of paying that much right now. I was kind of wondering more about the "lower" high end stuff - maybe other versions of built-ins that would have a similar look.
I love my LG. If you can wait a week, lots of retailers will be discounting for the holidays.
A lot of stores seem to be doing Black Friday prices all this week for appliances. Great deals out there now. I think I need to buy today - everything in the freezer is already ruined and I imagine the fridge will go any time now.

Our local appliance repairman, who I called because I didn't want to believe GE that they were the only ones who could fix the fridge (it was true, sadly), told me that some refrigerators/appliances have the GE Monogram label and look to them but aren't actually Monogram - they're another GE line, so can be repaired by non-GE technicians. Just a thought!
I Googled Samsung french door and a suggested search option that displayed was samsung french door problems so I clicked it and started reading. wow. That scares me away from them.. but.. if I did the same search on other brands and models possibly I'd see as many complaints about them. If you are searching for an appliance, googling the manufacturer, model name and problem might be a good thing to do.

Lol, I've been googling since 5am. I've seen a lot of the same comments for Samsung; the reviews are all over the place. I did find an LG French door model that seems to have consistently excellent reviews. Guess I better head out to the stores to see it in person.
We JUST got a new fridge delivered last Saturday. We had very strict height limitations because of our cabinets, and could not do French doors because of cabinets also. So we got a stainless freezer-on-the-bottom with no french door. Oh, and we have no water line behind the fridge, so no water dispenser for us. So you probably don't want our fridge lol. But I am loving it so far.
It's a Kenmore. Link if you are at all interested.

Ah, I was just looking at Kenmores because they seem to be high quality but I do have my heart set on French doors and the French door Kenmores don't seem to be on as marked down as some of the other models. That's a very pretty fridge, though!
My parents' and I both have had great experiences with the Samsung French door. I like the one with the ice maker in the freezer, though. I don't like an in-door ice maker.

We just bought a house with a Samsung French door fridge and the ice maker broke while we were under contract (after the inspection). Fridge is only about 2-3 years old. The previous owners couldn't get it fixed and so they wrote us a check for a new fridge at closing (I think they were scared of the house falling out of contract!). We still haven't been able to get the ice maker fixed and overall the electronics seem on the fritz.

I also have a Samsung french door which I love. I think if you want high end, Sub Zero is where it's at. Although they are like 3-4x the price of the Samsung models.

Oh, yeah, this is what we have too. If you don't have the in-door ice maker, you get a ton more storage space.

We had a Samsung French door fridge in our last house and I loved it and miss it dearly. It worked great for three years, had ice and water in the door, and had way more capacity than the higher end fridge in our new house. It is in my basement now and I hope to use it again some day.
I miss my Samsung french door fridge every day. We bought ours almost 5 years ago, and have had zero problems with it. We go through a LOT of ice in the summer, so we have the model with the ice maker in the door and in the freezer. It's just the two of us, so space wasn't an issue.
The couple that rents my house have NO idea how good they have it. We had replaced all of the kitchen appliances before we had to move on.
Ditto HD having mega sales right now. They go thru 12/3. We're getting a Samsung W&D set as soon as we get another GC from am/ex points in the mail. We are saving ~$440 on the set based on HD sale price with another $375 in GCs (hoarded points for GCs) so it's a huge steal for us.
FWIW we just bought a Samsung side-by-side fridge in June. It replaced a 4 yr old GE that crapped out on us. It's been great.
My dad has an appliance repair business, so he's been servicing appliances for 35+ years. I know he has never been a fan of Kenmore/Sears because, in general, they are poorly made. For new fridges, Samsung seems to have the fewest problems. When he does warranty work, he sees a lot of Frigidaire junked mainly due to ice maker issues. That being said, we have a Frigidaire gallery that we really like, but it was one that someone else got rid of/scrapped and my dad fixed it. It's worked great for us so far. Pretty much all of our appliance came from being damaged or broke, they took and fixed them and they've been good as new. It's a perk of being in an appliance repair family, haha.

Nice! We bought a new dishwasher, washer, and dryer too. We are going to put our current washer and dryer in our rental.
We have this beauty, and I love her. She was the driving reason of hiring really good movers because I didn't want her damaged when we moved a few months ago.
The door-in-door is awesome. So much space. Adjustable shelves.

We bought a Kenmore Elite French door refrigerator last year, with a door-in-door feature. At the time, it was going for $1k less than comparable models from LG and Samsung. We love it - no complaints!
Since all of you seem to like yours so much, I Just ordered a Samsung French door for $1225! GREAT appliance deals out there this week. I bought it at Best Buy and they actually said they will not be further lowering prices for Black Friday so if any of you need anything, buy now! Home Depot, Best Buy and Sears all had almost identical prices for all of the refrigerators I looked at.
We just installed a Liebherr with custom panels. It's a beautiful appliance. The fruit and meat drawers have ball bearing slides, and all the shelving is glass. Setting it up was a little complicated, but now that it's all programmed, it's perfect. Has a pretty good warranty as well. It's been a while since I read the warranty, but I think it starts off with everything, then I think drops the labor and compressor eventually, but other parts have a 12-year warranty.
ETA: Thermador is another high-end brand with a good reputation around here but even more pricey.
Oh Liebherrs are beautiful! I wish we had had more time to plan this out with our future kitchen plans so we could have explored our built in options more. Oh well.
