The only thing I really remember is my ped saying by around one year to have them off bottles onto sippy cups. I don't remember straw versus hard versus not. DD was all over the place with what she liked (Nuby soft spout, Zoli bot straw, etc). and it depended on what she was drinking. Like water had to be in Zoli and milk in the soft spout.
Bottom line, I think you're fine with the hard spout.
Dd still gets a sippy if she takes a drink into the living room. Water throughout the day and milk in the morning.
She is 4.5 and I hate Cleaning up spills.
This is my oldest too. We do open cups for the older two at the table, but take and toss at the very least every where else.
I wouldn't worry about it too much at all. I try and get mine over to take and toss ASAP because I HATE sippy cup parts. And if a milk cup goes rogue, I have no qualms about throwing it out.
I didn't realize there were guidelines. I let DD use open cups consistently once she wasn't spilling all over the place, maybe around 3.5? And she still had a sippy cup for her nighttime water when we were living in France. She was 5 when we moved back to the US.
Our pedi didn't care what kind we used, as long as there were no bottles. DS didn't really drink from straw cups until about 2.5. He never got the hang of it earlier. He started with open cups at 16m, but the rule in our house is if it's going to leave the kitchen, it's in a sippy. I don't like cleaning up more messes than I have to.
DS used a soft spout sippy until he was about 3.5. The dentist never asked what kind of sippy he used, and he always refused hard ones. We switched him to a straw cup at that point. He started getting open cups at school when he started 3K, a few months before he turned 4. We still give him a straw cup at home a lot of the time because he likes to carry his water from room to room.
ETA: I seriously just poured my water down the front of my shirt while typing this. Maybe I need to stick to straw cups myself.

The Munchkin Miracle cup seems like a good open cup transition. DS loves his. He is anti-sippy cup otherwise. I thought we would be using bottles for.ev.er.
