Remember how I was worried about my $$$ farm free-range turkey?
The farm I ordered from had two size choices (had to pick one): 8-15 pounds, or 15-30 pounds. I was like WTF, 8 is clearly too small and 30 is too big. The farm also said they could be fresh or frozen. I've been whining to DH for days "we're going to end up with a $130 FROZEN 30 lb turkey, aren't we?!"
Well DH did the turkey pickup, he was first in line when the farm store opened at 3pm. He scored a perfect 18lb fresh turkey. Go DH!!!

Yeah! DH and I forgot to order pies from a local farm and by the time we realized, it was too late. However, they said to stop by today and they would make us some right then that we can freeze and bake on Thanksgiving. We just got back with 3 pies: apple crumb, peach-raspberry crumb, and strawberry-rhubarb crumb. Thanksgiving is saved!
That's great! Last year we hosted and ordered a turkey from a local farm. We had just 5 adults and one kid. I couldn't get to the farm early enough, so we ended up with the smallest they had-27 lbs! It was ridiculous (but so tasty!).
DH apparently got there at 2:30, and waited a half hour in the cold. He said people were just milling around the entrance to the closed farm store, and he was thinking "oh hell no am I losing my spot if everyone rushes to the door." So he started telling people to form a line! He said "okay, I was here first, then sir I think you were next, then you ma'm" and gave everyone an icy stare and they fell into line.

That is so freaking awesome. I probsbly would have been much more passive aggresssive. He handled it so well!
Signed the girl that did get a $100 plus, 42lb turkey one year (fresh thankfully and the farmer only charged for 30 lbs)
Brilliant. We didn't raise turkeys this year but last year we raised 200. Some of them were 25-30 lbs and those suckers were hard to sell at $4/lb! I don't blame people for not wanting to spend $120. Pasture raised turkeys do have such good flavor though!
So was it still $130? Or did you pay by the pound?
It's by the pound. I think $4.50 a pound, so a 30lb turkey would have been $135!! The 18 pounder we got was still $80. So a hell of a lot. But we buy farm-raised meat pretty exclusively, so this wasn't all that different.
This farm has good products but they are so disorganized. I think the owner is holding onto too much control, so he does EVERYTHING. I'm like, dude, you can't butcher turkeys WHILE looking up confirmation receipts AND taking payments. Delegate!
