We got a box each of nb diapers and size 1s in swaddlers. We have lots of 3 month clothes and a few 6 month. Will how we dress him transition with spring? I don't know how much changes and how quickly with a newborn.
I wouldn't get any more nb diapers for now, since you don't know how long the baby will wear them (I think my daughter went through one box before she moved into size 1s), but we probably went through 10 boxes of size 1s, because you're changing them so often at that age. If she wants to get you an actual gift rather than cash/gift card, I say diapers all the way! And wipes, too!

Plain white long sleeve onsies in a variety of sizes (the multipack of carter's were my favorite). They were great for laying. I didn't realize how much I loved them until I had them.

More bibs and burp cloths. Clothes. You can always use clothes given how much they pee and poop on stuff Extra sheets A convertible car seat? High chair? Exersaucer or walker? A playmat? Toddler/infant feeding supplies (spoons, sippy cups, bowls, etc)
Seriously, let her buy clothes. Grandmas love that shit.
What about books? The kid will use board books for a few years, right? Are there good ones I could suggest beyond Seuss, Eric Carle, and the standards like little blue truck and goodnight moon?
DD is starting to read and board books are coming back into rotation since they have largely easy words to sound out so yes they are good for a long while.

Our boys love the llama llama series and shel Silverstein books if poems- Where the Sidewalk Ends, etc.
Books is a great idea. My mom gets L books and write a little note in them.
My MIL does this too.
Oh, or one of those books she can record her own voice in. My MIL did this with Twas the Night Before Christmas and my kids cherish their books (she did one for each.) They'll always have her voice on tape.

This. I could not get enough of these. I put the girls in the plain white ones more than the any other onesie.
I wouldn't stock up on too many diapers. I thought E would wear Pampers, but he leaked in those. I had to return a few cases I had purchased. We tried a few brands, and he ended up doing well in Huggles Lil Snugglers and Little Movers. He also grew out of sizes, quickly.
Ditto the books or stroller idea.
