Only answer for your main living/family/hanging out space, not a formal living space that doesn't get used by kids.
We have a coffee table. It's a round one with little stools that pull out so you can sit around if it you want. I like it bc DD can eat snacks there and play, but it's kind of big for the space and she would have more play space if we got rid of it, but then we would be out a coffee table. For some reason I think that looks weird.

We also just moved ours into another room once DS started crawling. I miss it, but it opens up the space for toys & playing. Not sure when we'll put it back...
No. We used to but it was too cluttered and the kids just used to stand on it anyway :/ it did look empty for a bit but now I'm used to it and really like the openness
Oh, the space isn't empty, lol. The girls have their mini Disney sofa in the middle of the floor and then most days it gets cluttered with books and toys they drag in from the play room (which would be the "formal" living room but right now it works great as a play room).

In our apartment, we got rid of it to have more play space.
In our current house, we don't have anything right now because we just moved in but we are getting a storage ottoman to act as a coffee table. No sharp edges or anything and will be made of softer material than a traditional coffee table. We have more space throughout the house for DD now and the ottoman will act as a coffee table/toy storage for the living room so it doesn't feel empty.
No, not in the "family room" we use for hanging out with the baby. We do in our downstairs living room, but we mostly use that space when C is asleep. We prefer to have a big, open, carpeted space where he can sit on the floor, do tummy time, play with his toys, etc. Our pergo flooring downstairs isn't great for spending time on the floor.
We got rid of our old wooden coffee table and replaced it with a rectangular leather ottoman than opens up and we use that as toy storage. we can put drinks and stuff on it when we are hanging out too.
We have an ottoman where the cushions flip over into trays. This way we can put our feet up, store blankets, and have a hard surface to set drinks down on. It's also light enough for me to easily move out of the way.
Nope, it got dumped into the basement for play space. I'd need one much larger than the one that we own for current space to look normal with one. I'd take a picture, but my dh is on the couch and didn't shower today.

We took ours down when DD started walking. Our living room isn't that big, and DD has decided that her anywhere chair should live where the coffee table used to be, so the room doesn't look empty. We do have end tables for drinks, etc, but I miss having a coffee table.
zarapipe, we use an ottoman that is the size of a coffee table in our living room. In the basement we have a coffee table. Here is the ottoman we have.
In our family room we have a normal sized coffee table but it's more like an ottoman, it has about a 4" leather cushion on top. I have a tray on it to hold drinks.
In our slightly more formal living room I do have a standard coffee table. We use each room about 50% of the time, the living room is downstairs and the family room is upstairs with a bigger tv.
] I've always had coffee tables and my kids are 5.5 and 2. People don't have coffee tables because they have kids? I've never heard of this before. Where do you put your drink, the remote, your feet while watching tv?
we have one. I should be ashamed to admit that we eat dinner there most nights (after DD goes to bed...we still haven't really melded baby dinner with adult dinner). It has rounded corners.
