Ha, I thought this post was going to be about childproofing. Our coffee table is a nightmare of glass and sharp corners and I was prepared to be judged. We used to eat on it pre-kids (apartment life) but now it holds magazines, books and DD's puzzles (unless we're cleaning for company). I think we lucked out with a calm, gentle DD; our next kid (IF there's a next kid) will probably tear the place apart.
We have a large storage ottoman instead of a coffee table. It holds all the kids toys. We have side tables beside the couch/chairs to put cups and stuff on.
SS. Yes, but it's seen better days and has a glass top that's impossible to keep clean. So I plan on trashing it once baby becomes mobile and replacing it with two small cube-like storage ottomans. They will have soft edges, be easier to move, and take up less space.
We moved ours to the basement when DS started walking. I don't miss it. We have an end table next to one of the couches for coffee and other drinks. I found we very rarely eat in the living room now which I guess is a positive as well.
We have an upholstered storage chest in place of a coffee table. We store some toys in there, it doesn't hurt the kids when they run into it, and we mostly use it to put our feet on. We do have a small tray that we often put on top to rest drinks/remotes when the kids aren't around to make it function more like a coffee table.

We just got new furniture and have two end tables coming, but I love having open space in the living room. I have a lot of "dance parties" with the kids and they have several push toys that end up in here.
We have a storage ottoman that we use as a coffee table in our family room. It's a neat ottoman that is specifically for storing video games and accessories. It's also padded so I don't have to worry about DS getting hurt on it.
no we got rid of it when ds was about 6m. our family room is narrow, so it was fine when we didnt have a kid but it left no room for playing. its doesnt look weird cause again, its a norrow room and we have other "kid" furniture in there now that makes it look balanced
No. We got rid of our coffee table in our living room when I was pregnant, so we'll have more play space as our little guy gets older and so we have one less set of sharp corners in there.
We have a big storage ottoman in our basement family room that matches the sectional, but it's soft and there's plenty of other room to play down there.

i don't have the room for one .... we had one pre-dd but post-dd .. no. more play space for her and less chance of her gashing her head on a corner of the coffee table - HUGE fear of mine.
Nope, never have. I didn't grow up with having one either. In our formal living room we had one though. In our house our formal living room is our play room so no coffee table in there either.
We got rid of our old wooden coffee table and replaced it with a rectangular leather ottoman than opens up and we use that as toy storage. we can put drinks and stuff on it when we are hanging out too.
