I know this is what "they" say, but seriously, how the hell did we survive our childhoods? I went to Florida (20+ hour road trip) sleeping in the back of a station wagon with the seats folded down.
A 4 year old can safely sit in a backless booster if their head is still supported by their seat, and the seatbelt crosses properly.
I also can't get up in arms about forward facing at one. Yes it's safer to RF, but man, this seems to have turned into a race of "who can RF the longest".
Out of the 50+ mom friends/acquaintances I have from playgroup, there are 4 of us that are RFing at 2+. The majority were turned by 15 months if not the day they turned 1. GBCN may make it a race, but definitely not my experience IRL.

God, I hate this kind of crap logic. Plenty, plenty, plenty of children have died because of no carseats/improper use. Thousands. Just google for a little bit before you decide that because you didn't have a carseat as a child, carseats are dumb or whatever you're getting at here.

The way I look at it as well if I can help one mom who just plain didn't know, then I feel successful. I posted a graph or something a while back about ERF and my friend from college started saying she worried about legroom, but she knew she was supposed to go until 2, etc. I posted some pictures of DD1, a couple short articles and now she is all in favor of ERF.
So while I may not message, text, etc every person with a bad carseat picture, I will post everything I can that says FF at one is much less safe. Just because something is legal doesn't make it the safest option.

when I clicked on the link in your sig, it told me there isn't a certified technician in my area, which I am sure cannot be true, because I live in NYC. Any reason why this is happening?

There was an article going around fb this week. A family of 8 was driving to WDW and the 16 yo was driving, fell asleep and 6 of the family died. Only 2 were wearing seat belts, which means some of the kids under 10 weren't in car seats. And now that poor kid is responsible for their deaths.

There definitely should be a bunch. I can dig up the info for the one who posts in my neighborhood group if you want. I'm sure there's one much closer to you though.

Thank you!!!! It must be a glitch in their system. I think I will phone tomorrow to see if I can find something close, if not, I will page you.
cilantro and @fivedogs I know. That's why I acknowledged "they" say it. I was wondering aloud how I survived because, dude, barreling down I-95 in the back of a station wagon with the seats down is not safe at all.
So our pedis (we've had 2) have never asked about car seats.... ever.
Hell, no one checked our seat or anything when we left the hospital either (both times).
Ditto this. And ditto above posters on not taking pictures. It took both me and DH about 15 minutes of wrangling to get the seat into a rental car today and make sure the straps were at the right height for DS, tight enough, etc. This is what happens when DS grows a billion inches in between car rides, but parental challenges re:car seats are part of it. Thank goodness DD is in a booster already or it might have taken us hours to get on the road.
My friend was showing me pictures of her baby. The straps were way too loose and the chest clip was way too low. I kept my mouth shut. (Same friend mentioned that her doctor said no chocolate, caffeine, or booze while BFing. Oh. Okay.)
Another friend couldn't get her infant base installed so she just does belt install every time with the seat. I guess she could be installing it correctly every time, but I'm going to go with no since she didn't bother to figure out the base.
I'm such a judgey asshole considering our infant seat is sitting here waiting for me to install it before baby arrives.
We're on our second kid and have never used the base. I'm not saying that I know what the hell I am doing, but I thought the lack of a base was the least of my issues.
God, me too. I ddint even know there was such a thing as a car seat tech.
my kid was slumped forward, sleeping yesterday, and I was wondering if he's in there wrong, and that's why he's sleeping like that.
Usually in a RFing seat, it is fine for them to slump sideways as long as their head doesn't flop forward (although at 13 months, I don't think that is quite as problematic as with a younger baby). FFing, it is very common even with preschoolers (my DD1 still does it sometimes), which is one reason why most kids of that age are not ready for a booster. Their whole body flops forwards while asleep and the seatbelt is not going to work well.
That is why I still have my 6 year old in a five point harness. The sleeping issue.

His head was flopped forward. Does that mean the straps aren't tight enough?

What were your search parameters? I put in New York for the city and NY for the state, and I got 17 (it might top out at a certain number, but the CSL on there). A zip code might work better. I can't get my screenshot to paste, but I'm using Chrome.
Your local SafeKids might also have a list.
I sent an email to the SafeKids contact. Hopefully, that will be answered in the next week or so. I'm all paranoid that my seat isn't in correctly. We don't drive very often, which is why I haven't spent enough time researching it (which really isn't a very good excuse at all).

What seat is it? Usually that means that they are too upright - does your seat have a line or a bubble level?
It's a Graco 65 (I think that's its name). It does have a bubble level. I just moved it from the center seat to behind the passenger seat, because it didn't fit tightly there. However, I have to make my seat go all the way back in order to pull it forward (old, cheap car, LOL). I will double check to make sure that it is level next time we use it.

Would you like to hear my coworker's childhood memory of surviving a fairly minor accident with no seatbelts? She and her older sister were in the hospital for over a month. Her baby sister wasn't that lucky. I can't even bring myself to type out the horrific details she remembers. She had nightmares for years.
But yeah, she survived so seatbelts and car seats are stupid.

I responded up thread. I should have made myself more clear, but I really was wondering aloud how we survived, acknowledging that that is something "they" (safety haters?) say. Prob should have elaborated on that. Your coworker's story is terrible. Trust me, I'm not a safety hater.
I wondered what prompted you to share that bricco I'm glad I have MMM, because I wouldn't know nearly as much about car seat safety without posting here.

The Car Seat Lady is in nyc and they do seat checks.
How do I get a magical 6-year-old who falls asleep in cars? This would make our long road trips so much easier.
You don't want it how it works in my house Kid wakes up way too early (especially on weekends), is grouchy much of the day, then if we drive anywhere longer than 15 minutes, he conks out in the car, only to wake up once we arrive at our destination even grouchier than before. He won't nap either. Its not fun (wilted)
Omg, that's horrible. How did he get thrown? Is it because he's forward facing?
Her boyfriend only had the chest clips buckled for both boys carseats. So he was thrown because he was FF and not buckled in properly because the chest clips broke on impact.
She posted a picture of her kiddo in the seat and said something like, "Why didn't anyone tell me this was wrong?" It scares me a little that I don't see what is wrong with the pic she posted. Can someone enlighten me?

I think because it's forward facing. The clips, etc., looked ok to me.

I struggle with this too. I feel like I should say something, but people (understandably) get so defensive if they think you're criticizing the way they parent.
My "compromise" is that I just talk about how I'm just crazy obsessed with carseat safety and that I just want to keep my kids as safe as possible. Without specifically saying what other people are doing "wrong." I actually did have a woman a few years ago who I was talking to about how I was still rear facing DD1 at 2.5 and she said something about how she and her husband weren't too worried about carseats since they survived without them. A few weeks later she got into a car accident, and she emailed me to thank me for saying something because she'd used carseats after our conversation.
Also, apparently the thing among the kindergarteners waiting in the carpool line is to talk about whether you have a carseat or a booster. I told DD1 I didn't care what the other kids had, she was staying in a carseat for a while :-)

I was thinking the same thing. He does look under a year(I think she said 11 months) and forward facing so that's bad. Straps also don't look tight enough.

My kindergartener said the same thing. The other part of the reason beyond sleep (as to why I haven't converted the nautlius to a booster) is because I have been lazy about it, so there's that too.

Because you were lucky enough that the car wasn't in an accident.
