I need help. My hair feels so gross all the time. I wash it every day and it just feels nasty by the end of the day. I wear it down, try not to touch it and brush it often but it gets so tangled.
My hairdresser thought it was because I switched to Joico KPax shampoo and conditioner, which is super moisturizing and perhaps. She suggested I switched to a volumizing shampoo/conditioner to see if that helps. Well, it's not helping. I don't use any product in my hair either. Dry shampoo won't cut it either.
Not sure if this is due to me being pregnant but I never really had hair this greasy since recent months. I think I might see my derm to see if she has suggestions, but wanted to see if anyone here has this issue and has had success with a particular product.
Someone on ML recommended Aveda's Scalp Benefits shampoo. Holy moly. I can go three days without washing (with a little dry shampoo.) Prior, my hair was greasy 12 hours after washing. Dry shampoo wouldn't buy me second day hair.
It is a bit drying so I make sure to use a good conditioner from the nape down. It took a couple days to really notice a difference. But it's been a HUGE game changer for me.
I just use a "normal" shampoo and conditioner. It's actually the Clove from Aveda, it's for brown/honey tones in colored hair. It's not especially moisturizing - like, at all. I do find that coloring it makes it less oily I use a little volumizing spray or powder (Aveda) at the roots, and on days when I wear it down, I usually braid or twist the hair along my hairline and pin it back. This keeps it off my forehead and stops me from playing with it. I will say as I've gotten older (and my skin generally more dry), it's gotten much better, and I can go a day without shampooing. Maybe

You have an oily scalp. I do too and it's been seriously awful for the past 6 years. I've tried a million things with some success. I used Biolage Anti-Dandruff shampoo with the zinc in it for years and it worked well. It stopped working earlier this year and I've tried a bunch of products since. The only thing that is now working is a super expensive Shu Uemura shampoo.
Try using a clarifying shampoo first (I like Kenra) and then use a shampoo designed for oily scalps. And just use conditioner on the ends of your hair, no other products on the scalp.
This is going to sound crazy, but don't wash it every day. My hair is actually less oily when I wash it every other day.
Ditto. It starts out gross, but try to wash only every other day. In about a week, your scalp will start to produce less oil (our heads weren't meant to have the natural oil removed every day). Then stretch it out another day.
I used to be like you; now I wash my hair every 4-5 days.
I used to have oily hair, then I stopped washing it every other day. I can get 4-5 days between washings, if I am able to wear my hair up or use dry shampoo the last day. The key is taking a week or so to break your hair out of the washing every day habit, and using a sulfate-free shampoo - and not one that uses sulfate substitutes. I've used Burt's Bees, Avalon Organics and a generic Whole Foods shampoo.
I had very, very oily hair for years. It is also very light colored so the oil would show. I switched shampoo and conditioner to ones without sulfates or parables and now only wash every second to third day. I only use conditioner on the part of my hair from the nape of my neck down and focus my shampoo primarily on my scalp. I also use dry shampoo the night after I wash it, before going to sleep.
It took a little while to transition my hair and a lot of trial and error for dry shampoos and shampoo/conditioners but it has been totally worth it.

My sister told me she read an article suggesting using conditioner first, then shampoo to help with hair that gets greasy quickly. I thought it was weird but gave it a try and it does seem to help quite a bit. I've been doing it for a few weeks now.

I've always had greasy hair. The trick is to not wash it as often. The idea is that modern shampoos strip all the natural oils from your hair, so your hair compensates by overproducing oil to make up for it. So you're stuck in a vicious cycle.
A few years ago on this board people were talking about "co-washing" (ie, conditioner washing). I've been doing that for a couple years now, and it makes a big difference! I only use shampoo once or twice a week. The other days I "wash" my hair with conditioner. I massage the conditioner into my scalp and it takes away oil without stripping it. You can't just use any conditioner, though, you need to use something without sulfates, etc. I use Suave Naturals. From what I recall, this is supposed to be a poor man's version of that Wen system you can buy.
I need to work harder on not doing anything to my hair some days, but even using the conditioner to wash it daily, my hair is a lot less greasy than it used to be.
Absolutely agree! My hair got really greasy - it was so gross. It was at its worst post partum. I tried a bunch of different shampoos but the one that helped the most was Redken Cleansing Cream.
My hair has gotten way dry during pregnancy. Weird.
But I've always had oily hair otherwise. Different shampoos do make a difference--I haven't found a holy Grail product, but some are worse than others.
Have you tried putting dry shampoo in your hair as soon as it is washed and dried? That helps some. Suave and Batiste brands have been most affective for me.
Really the best things I've found when it was very bad where bleaching my hair--usually just with highlights and trying not to touch it. I would also sometimes just wash my bangs after work before doing things in the evening if they looked bad.
Mine used to be oily. I transitioned to washing it every 4-5 days. If you've got several days you'll be at home, don't wash your hair. Then go to every other day, then you can stretch it from there.
It also helps to use dry shampoo before it gets greasy vs. once it's already greasy. I like the Not Your Mother's brand right now. I've also gotten Batiste before and liked that. While the Suave is cheap, it seems to leave waxy buildup on my hair. The other two are more absorbent.

Mine is oily. I used to wash it every day, but when I switched to every other day, the oil production went down. I still have to put it in a pony tail the second day, but it doesn't look disgusting like it used to.
Question for those that don't wash their hair everyday, what do you do if you get sweaty? I've been trying to work out everyday and my lower neck sweats pretty bad. Do you still get your hair wet?

A lot of people just let the sweat dry and go on with their business.
I rinse my hair with warm water in the shower almost nightly, shampoo every 3-4 days, use dry shampoo in between shampoos, and brush daily to distribute oil away from the scalp.
Don't shampoo every day. If you get a little sweaty, try a dry shampoo, then brush and style as normal. If you get really sweaty, you can rinse in plain water, but skip the shampoo.
I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it helped me a LOT especially when I was pregnant and my hair went oily.
I have very oily hair. I've actually found that after I switched to washing it every other day it became less oily for me. It took a bit of time, but it's much more manageable now. I'm able to use dry shampoo in between.
