One guy does not have a door on the side of his house. He has this large blue sheet that hangs in front of the doorway and keeps the screen door open. This way his two large dogs can run in and out. The door opens into the kitchen. I noticed this a few summers ago while walking around the neighborhood and realized that he does this year-round and in all weather conditions.
Another one is this old lady that feeds the squirrels peanuts. I can't stand it because then they dig up my flower pots trying to bury the nuts. It took me a while to realize why there were always peanut shells in my garden.
We have a neighbor who spends a lot of time sitting in his garage in a patio chair reading. Even when it's cold out, he has the garage door open and sits there reading (books, magazine, newspaper, whatever). Several hours a day. I have no idea WHY he goes out to the garage to read. They are an older couple, and go for lots of walks together in the neighborhood so I doubt it's to escape his wife.
OK I was just about to talk about this old guy down the street that sits in his garage and watches tv in a lawn chair. It'll be a billion below zero and snowing and he will be there, in his parka, sitting in an old lawn chair watching football on his HUGE flatscreen hanging in the garage with the door open.
I don't know if he has a wife or what...I've never seen her, but he's really nice and will always say "hi" if you walk past.
H and I assumed it was to escape his wife, if he has one.
Haha, one of the houses I walk by sometimes has a garage like this. He even put sliding doors on the side rather than a service door!

Our old neighbors were drug dealers, and were up all hours of the night being noisy. I called the landlord, the cops, etc, but no one could do anything. We ended up moving soon after, but I'm annoyed about having to. We had planned to move eventually, but we felt like we had to get out sooner rather than later, so we settled on the house we're in now. We like it, it's fine, but we would have preferred something different. There was just nothing in our price range in the school district we wanted.
I understand this view but it is so foreign to me. I would say 90% of the homes here do not have a garage and many don't have driveways big enough to hold more than one car. Street parking is just the norm.
Eta: and I live in the suburbs.
If you don't have any other options then of course you'd park in the street.
This is my neighborhood (not really):
We all have 2 (and 3!) car garages. PARK IN THEM FFS.
Maybe they have all turned their garages into man caves so there isn't any room for their cars
I miss my hot mess neighbors. The husband was sleeping with the woman who lives behind us. The wife knew but he wouldn't stop. So much drama and so damn fun to gossip about.
Oh, and both wife and girlfriend were trying to get pregnant
The new people across the street from us park in the street on a daily basis directly behind our driveway, in front of their neighbor's house, which makes it really hard for us to back out. The neighbor's oldest daughter's boyfriend always parks in front of our house instead of the house he's visiting. We very specifically chose our neighborhood due to the HOA not allowing street parking overnight. Park in front of your own house, people, if you're going to park in the street during the day.
The lady on the other side of us killed off her lawn a couple months ago. She seeded and strawed, but only weeds grew back. There's no grass.

I hate if people mow the lawn before 8am. Not enough to complain to them, because I get it, it gets hot later in the day, people work weird hours, whatever. But please, for the love of God, don't mow your lawn at 6am on a Saturday just for funsies. It's not that much hotter at 8.
We have street parking on only 1 side of the street (not our side). Our neighbor across the street has a new boyfriend who parks in the middle of the two driveways, so it takes up both spots. Every other person on the street manages to fit 2 cars there.
We don't NEED to park in the street, but it helps so that we don't have to play musical cars every morning since we have a single lane driveway. I really really want to take spray paint and paint a line. Passive aggressive, party of one!

My DH does this. He even has a heater. He doesn't always have the door up.
I have zero idea why he does this. I mean, he's obsessed with cars and sometimes works on the car he's restoring out there but not always. We have a big house, why would you want to sit in the garage?

We live beside hermits...legit hermits. We have lived here 5 years and have never spoken with them. We live on a cul du sac and everyone is friendly and neighborly. They speak to no one, are never outside, never take a walk, no candy at halloween. Its soooo odd. They also never decorate for any season or holiday (no pumpkins/ mums, no xmas, no flowers in spring, nada) which in our suburban neighborhood is odd as well. They also neved have more then this one light on amd never use the outside house lights.
To add to the oddness they have a toddler. I never even knew she was pregnant till i saw the trash for baby stuff outside and have now seen the toddler getting into the car a year later. They never have the kid outside. Weirdos!
Our neighbor has all sort of random house guests who camp out in his yard. Like, with tents and shit. We live in the city, this is most definitely odd. Sometimes they have weird conversations about what is the good season for fennel at like 3am.
Otherwise he seems like a perfectly normal person.

So far, no weird neighbors but we're very new to the block so I'm giving it time.
Our apartment complex had some harmless weirdos. The only not-harmless weirdo was the bitch who said in front of everyone at our annual shareholders meeting (co-op apartments and DH was on the board) that DH abuses his wife. There was some building issue and she just wasn't happy with the board's decision and after DH threatened to call the cops on her one night because she caused a ruckus in our courtyard, she held a vendetta against him. If I were at this meeting instead of home with our baby, I think the cops would have been called on ME.

@madamepresidente,our neighbors do the same thing. It's been months! There are never any cars parked in the driveway even though they have one of those car shelter awnings. They seem to have 2 cars that are always on the shoulder of the road. I don't understand!

Our old apartment neighbours were interesting. This was a crappy, mouse infested, and infested slum apartment building we got right our of University.
The first ones that lived below us smoked pot all the time and it wafted up through the floorboards. They also yelled constantly and party at weird times like Wednesday night but would complain about us walking. We used to mess with them by leaving our WiFi open (because they didn't have Internet so they stole ours and were on MSN Messenger all. The. Time. - we could hear the alerts). Then we'd spend a couple hours randomly unplugging the router. When they moved out a shy middle aged lady moved in. She said she'd left her husband in another province. Different people would randomly show up and knock on her door for ages saying they knew she was in there. Dh met one guy who said he was a friend who said that they had to check on her a lot to make sure she was okay. Then dh ran into her ex... While he was looking for a brick to break her window and crawl in. Guy was like "oh this isn't what it looks like. I was looking for the spare key" haha.... Dh was like "I don't think she's home..." No idea what was going on there but I highly doubt she was glad he came. He eventually moved in and we never heard any fighting.

Is one of his tent-dwellers a tall blonde guy with a lions mane of dreads? Because my cousin (who moved to Seattle) is the kind of individual who would squat in someone's front yard in a tent. Also, he works at Patagonia so he could have gotten a good deal on said tent. (He is very smart and graduated from university of Michigan but has trouble, uh, applying himself. LOL)

My one weird neighbor leaves their dogs outside all night. They bark off and on through the night... It is clearly illegal to do this here. I don't understand. I don't call the police though because I am afraid the dogs would end up being put down.
I have heard they are "really nice people", but I can't get past how they treat their animals.

Several of our neighbors have turned their garages into illegal living spaces for their extended family members, so my street is constantly filled with parked cars. I think we are one of two houses that parks even one car in our garage. We are not, it's safe to say, in the classiest of neighborhoods.
My neighbor drives me nuts with his yard. About 8:30 PM he'll fire up the lawn mower and start mowing just the front and about 3' in on either side. He'll do this for weeks so the grass left behind ends up over a foot long. My kids are down at 8. When he does end up mowing the high grass it takes so long he's often still out there when my husband goes to bed.
He shares part time custody and works from home. Our yards don't take more than 30 mins.
Oh, I can't remember if I posted this. I might have posted some of it before.
Our neighbors across the street are super nice, probably my parents' age (50s). Their son, who is at least 30, lives at home with them. His name is Chad. We have started calling him The Chad, a la Charlie's Angels.
For at least 1.5 years, we did not see The Chad ever leave the house. Not even to walk to his car. Then, the mom had a stroke and The Chad had to start pulling his weight around the house. He does things like mow the lawn shirtless when it's 63* out, but in a black hoodie on a hot day.
H went over there last week to ask if it was okay to park in their driveway (they always offer) when we had a party. The Chad was like, "Yeah, no problem!" Then H said something like, "Well, nice day out! Have a good one!" and The Chad said, "Yeah, about to finish up my community service. I think I'm getting pretty close on my hours, might be done today!" LOLOLOLOL. I think that if I was mandated to do court-ordered community service, I might keep that one under the radar and just say "Yep, got a lot to do, see you later!"
We live in military housing, so we have had all sorts of crazy neighbors. Our last post was drama drama drama. The cops were constantly across the street for something. One time, the teenage daughter tried to run away, the mom and dad tried to stop her, and they had a Jerry Springer confrontation in the middle of the street. The other neighbor hated their neighbors across the street and came over more than once to say "hey, tell the cops what you saw!" I saw nothing. Not playing, I really had no clue wtf she was talking about. The cops came and both of them moved shortly after. Rumor has it that they were all cheating on each other with other people. It was weird.
My favorite weird neighbor was the Korean lady that lived below us and would belt out American Christmas music in A mix of Hangul and English in the middle of the summer.
We have neighbors with a 2 car garage, 2 adults and no kids. They built storage in the roof of their garage, too. The thing is, they have so much random stuff in their garage, they can't park EITHER car inside. It's been about 5 years.
Not a smoker is he?
I don't think so, but it's possible -- I'll look next time!
@hannymaren We don't think so From what my other neighbor gathered they got a heads up that the police wanted to meet with them so they probably took things out or produced a medical MJ card which means you are allowed to grow six plants. We are in CO where MJ is legal but it's definitely not legal to have a big grow operation in your home. Other neighbor thinks they are back in business though. I will say they are very quiet and we don't see a bunch of cars coming and going from the house but something weird is going on for sure.
