You know how we always talk about how it would be great if they taught real, practical finance lessons to kids while they're still in school? I just saw this new program that Vanguard developed with a California teacher and I love the concept! Haven't looked into it in great detail yet, but I think it's great that they've developed a free curriculum available to all teachers. It looks like they start as young as kindergarten!
I was in a small group, advanced math class in 3rd grade. It was awesome, we got to do all sorts of fun, special projects. One of them included learning about personal finance and how to balance a checkbook. I remember it being super fun and it was such a great thing to do at that age. It is kind of sad that the regular class didn't do it. They were too busy learning their multiplication tables.

I did this too. It was fun and educational. Can't see it happening here, sadly, in liberal land. I took my son to open his own brokerage account now that he is 5. It makes me sad that it seems to be taboo to discuss such things here. Too capitalistic.
Well either that video was an amazing production, or I've had too much red wine... It about put e to tears. Love the work behind teaching kiddos how to be responsible with money!!
In Kinder the boy's teacher gave every student a dollar. Then a quarter went to taxes, a quarter to living expenses and a quarter to charity. Their tax dollars went to fill the city pool with water. The mayor came and thanked them.

So simple but fantastic.
STUPID LIBERALS AND THEIR CHARITIES AND THEIR PUBLIC POOLS.
Your kids are doomed to grow up as pinko anti-capitalists.

WTF? Could you elaborate on your theory, please? I'm liberal as fuck and I talk about money with my kids.

Yeah ditto this. My parents are also liberal as fuck and wealthy and taught me SO much about personal finance. I was using Quicken at 14 lol. I plan to instill the same education in my children.
When did liberal start meaning we don't care about financial literacy??

Uh, what happened to the other quarter? Did they actually save it?
Pshaw -- they're liberals. They probably pissed it away on skittles and video games.
Our school earns "bucks" with behavior and incentives. The fifth grade class also has "market days" where they sell goods and services. They can take the "money" they earn and save or spend on goods from other students. GD1 and some of her friends sold duct tape wallets and did a nail polish spa. After their first market day, they discussed what worked and what didn't work. It was a lesson on economics, business theory, financial literacy and a few other things as well. I love that they do this in the school. I wish there was more of an emphasis on saving with it however.

Sorry for the delay in your entertainment, I was busy coordinating the people renovating my house, and driving to my vacation home. I don't think the liberals in my neighborhood are opposed to financial education, but when I looked at the actual method of curriculum in this program for K and 1st (only looked at those two years curriculum because it is all I care about at the moment.), no way are they going for something that would essentially rank their little darlings based on behavior by giving them "dollars", especially if it is something that can be seen by the whole class. They won't even allow rainbow colors for behavior.

All of the schools I/my children have been associated with do rainbow colors for behavior. All of the schools around here do (elementary only, of course). They also give reward dollars, the amount of which can be seen by the whole class. I guess what happens in your area is indicative of what all liberals believe and would teach, though. Good to know.

My school, the one that does Market Days and gives bucks for behavior and performance is in a school district that is liberal as shit. We also clip up and clip down for behavior, something the entire class sees.
But then, maybe it's because we have legalized marijuana. The educators must have been stoned liberals when they decided that financial literacy was a good thing.
