DH and I are possibly going to San Fran and Sonoma late June. I have been to SF before, but it was so long ago that I have no idea what area of town to look at for hotels. Any recs are appreciated!
I only went there once and stayed at The Scarlet Huntington, and do NOT recommend it. Their valet got into an accident in our rental car and they promised to cover the costs, and then when we went to the same manager the next day he supposedly had no idea what we were talking about.
This was in the Nob Hill section (across the street from Grace Cathedral) and it was very inconvenient to get to the attractions from that neighborhood.
My BFF and I stayed here last year and loved it. It's a cute little B&B with a great location and is affordable compared to the big hotels. It's in between the two major cable car lines and you can walk to/from the BART station (take BART from the airport).

Union Square is a good location. Union Square West can get a bit sketchy as it borders the Tenderloin, so for a site like Priceline I'd try to get Union Square East if you're not comfortable in tougher neighborhoods. Fisherman's Wharf is another major hotel area, but I personally prefer Union Square because it's more central and not 100% tourists.

I think you might have that backwards? Union Square East should be the good option and West is the part by the Tenderloin.
Otherwise, I agree with all of this and will add the Embarcadero as another area to consider. It's on the edge of Union Square and I prefer it to Fisherman's Wharf.

We really liked The Westin St. Francis in Union Square. We stayed in the newer/more updated side with an awesome glass elevator. It was central to restaurants and shopping, and had a cable car stop right out front, plus tons of taxis readily available.

I was just coming here to suggest this. Adorable little B&B with great service and rates were under $200 WITH a private bathroom. One or two (steep) blocks to Union Square.
I stayed here for work when everything else in the neighborhood was booked and then booked it again for this year's conference (by choice).
