There are two people who know the truth and one is dead. I choose not to believe the white cop who shot and killed an unarmed black kid. A cop that comes from a known rage filled dirty police force and has changed his story already. A cop who has been coached for weeks so his story matched the evidence.
I'd also add the he recently got married in a quickie ceremony. No way in hell his GF now wife didn't know something incriminating.
Or is in fact a dick sociopath who gets married in the midst of this shit.

Precisely this. I read the entirety of his testimony, too. There are SO many little details in his story that just seem odd. That a kid who just robbed a store would start cursing at an officer instead of just moving to the sidewalk? That he would stop in the middle of the fight to ask his friend to hold his stolen cigarettes? That he would dare the officer to shoot him? That he would reach into his waistband while charging the cop who had already shot him? When he didn't even have a weapon? What was he reaching for?
I'm highly suspicious of everything coming out of this guy's mouth. And that's the point of a trial, isn't it? To parse his story point for point? For an attorney on Brown's side to cross examine him? For an UNBIASED jury to examine all of the evidence and the stories and try to determine what happened?
I don't know if he should be convicted or not. But I absolutely believe he should have faced trial for it. Not indicting him was absurd.
Ok, so that was super long. I read the entire first half and then skimmed the rest. So forgive me if I'm missing something. But I didn't finish reading it because I had several years of history class?
I 100% agree that black people have been and continue to be treated unfairly. They face more obstacles than white people in just about every aspect of their lives. Should we be paying reparations to black people to help them escape a life of crime and poverty and to repay the sins of our ancestors? Sure. Native Americans get royalties, so I don't think that the idea of reparations is completely far fetched. I believe in affirmative action. I believe that black people suffer inequities and injustice. I believe that racism still exists, even in people that claim they aren't racist. So what are we going to do? Indict DW because some other guy unjustly killed a black guy one day a long time ago? No.
Forgive me if this is a crass comparison, but I do think it's similar. Women are also oppressed. Women only make 73% of what a man makes for working the same job. There are over 700 pieces of legislation governing women's bodies. Around the world women are raped as a weapon of war. Women are catcalled, sexually assaulted and abused everywhere, every day. There have been plenty of times when men have gotten away with rape. Where women have been imitated and pressured into silence. It is really terrible, and really sad. On the other hand, sometimes, a woman claims consensual sex is rape (2-4% of rape cases turn out to be false). Yes, women are unfairly prejudiced regularly, but we are supposed to punish her "rapist" because, most of the time, men do hurt women? No. That's not how it works.
It was his stepfather who yelled that, NOT his father. His father had released a statement calling for peace.
This is SO important. Michael Brown Sr has been calling for peace and asking people to honor Michael Brown Jr's memory.Â
This is what I mean when I say the reason for the outrage gets lost in the chaos. The fact that Michael Brown's family is asking for peace should mean everything for the people of Ferguson.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't MB's family ask that the rioting stop? Did I make that up?
They did in their statement I heard on the news last night, but right after the verdict was read MB's dad yelled "burn this place down" several times.
1. As others have already pointed out, that was his stepfather, not his father. 2. I can't imagine having a camera on my face during a time of such raw emotion. I wouldn't be surprised if I yelled angry things too, but calmed down after that moment and didn't really mean them.

Even if it were his father, if anyone gets a pass for shitty behavior it would be his parents. Their child was killed and his killer is going free without even a trial. I can't imagine that kind of grief.

Oh, absolutely. They were not told the verdict in advance, so some asshole out a camera in his face as he was being told his son's killer would walk free. I dare anyone to remain calm in that moment.
I am shocked and outraged that anyone believes Wilson. Seriously bean you are basing your opinions in Wilsons lies and cover ups? That is asinine!
I'm basing my opinions on forensics. When the story first came out that an unarmed black kid was surrendering to a police officer and was executed I was outraged and angry like the rest of America. When I did my (admittedly very limited research) i saw a young man who just robbed a store and roughed up a much smaller business owner. He was then approached by a police officer who had evidence of facial and neck injuries from MB and there's evidence by gun shot patterns that he was in fact going for his weapon. Eyewitness accounts that support the theory that MB was surrendering seem to be inconsistent and the trajectory of shots seemingly don't support that theory. I guess I'm confused why Wilson should have been indicted. It seems like he was justified in discharging his weapon and was in imminent danger.
dont get me wrong- I don't doubt for a second that ferguson has corrupt racist cops and needs major reform. The fact that his body lied there uncovered is appalling and I believe that the investigation was poorly handled.

Dude DW said or did something his girlfriend knew that was damaging, or he never has a quickie wedding while waiting to see if he is going to indicted.
Do I think he was a a homicidal nut? No, but I do think he was likely a somewhat bigoted hit head who wasn't all that smart and who fucked up big time.

Except for the fact MB was unarmed.
When a 6'5 300lb guy is going for his weapon what should have he done instead?

Honestly -- been a better cop. DW escalated the situation from the initial contact.
Andplusalso, DW isn't a pushover, size wise. He's 6'4" and 250 lbs. And, dude, he's older, has had police training, etc. He should have tried to de-escalate the situation before drawing his weapon.

Maybe I just don't have knowledge of police tactics but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around a cop who is being punched, strangled and has someone grabbing for his gun should do anything other than shoot. Maybe there was something he could have said differently to de-escalate someone who just committed a crime and was trying to avoid cops but I still can't say this makes DW a murderer and MB an innocent victim.

It's almost as if that is why there should be a trial
Also, if people are so certain DW is telling the truth, then why WOULDN'T they want him to go to trial? It seems like that would truly "clear his name" or whatever.

Is that the standard protocol in these cases? If forensic evidence supports his testimony and witness testimony to the contrary is deemed unreliable what did the GJ have to go on to indict? I feel like I'm missing some big part of the story that everyone else is clued into so I'm all sorts of confused at the outrage.

the physical evidence backs his story up. things like shell casings and blood splatter. bruising and scratching on MB and DW's body.
I know the department has issues with racial profiling and such- but any instances with just DW? I've worked with many racist and sexist cops-- it is gross and does cast a bad image on the department, especially when those issues are reported and procedures are done properly within the department. Hence why people cover shit up. It's super easy to just be fucking nice and not assume shit. But people can suck.
also did anyone see the chick that approached the media after the ruling? she was wearing aviators, a hat, and a police sweatshirt and read a note from DW- was that his wife?? she's part of Ferguson police, right?

Yea...he should have you used those super secret ninja skills he learned at cop college to overtake him from inside the car. Give me a break.
You know what police are trained for? Do not let the criminal gain control of your weapon. Shoot to kill (why he was shot 6 times instead of once). Come home to your family at the end of the day.

From conversations with my cop friends, whenever they go to court to see if they are indicted they just say who they are, who they work for and read a prepared narrative about the situation. The grand jury is not presented with any evidence at that time. Of course, this is for smaller infractions. @zbeesma87 any insight?
