cider (for me) and a very nice card that said good luck and congrats and hope you make beautiful memories in this house. We saw all this on the kitchen counter while we went to collect the keys. Is this common? We have no contact with her, so I don't know how we can reciprocate but this is just too damn sweet, right?
ETA : While we are on this topic, what should I get our agent? She said she'll come by about a month after we move in.
That's sweet. We are thinking about selling our house and I want to leave a little basket with random stuff you forget when you move - toilet paper, new plungers and toilet brushes, etc.
That's really sweet! We left a note for our buyers that included some random information about the house (the garage code, etc) but we also told them how we got engaged and married while living in this house and we hope it brought them the same joy. We knew we wouldn't hear from her but we just wanted them to know how much we loved the house.
Our sellers also did this. They left us a basket with a bottle of wine, 2 glasses, some crackers, and a note about how much they had loved the house and hoped we would have as many happy memories in it as they did. I thought that was pretty awesome. I don't think reciprocation is really necessary in that instance. If you have their forwarding address, a nice thank you note should suffice.
Also, I have never, and wouldn't, give my realtor anything other than good reviews and referrals.
My parents left the buyers of their house a similar gift. (Champagne and a card worded pretty much the same as yours). They were very attached to the house and it was hard for them to sell it, some how I think the gesture made them feel better. They didn't expect anything in return.

When we sold our first house we left behind some bottles of wine in the wine rack. The buyer sent our agent a nice note. When we bought our second house the previous owner left us a bunch of almost expired beer in the fridge. nice.
When we bought our third house (the one we live in now) we had met the owner because he was doing FSBO-ish and he left us a nice note and a bottle of champagne. He worked from home so we did him the favor of passing on random mail for the first year that was somehow missed in his mail forwarding.
Never bought an agent a gift, they usually gifted us small stuff.

We need to do that lunch we keep talking about. I will text you after the holiday, I want to know where you are moving to?

I know this is totally ungrateful, but our realtor sent us a basket of fruit, cheese, and chocolate as a gift. To the house we were selling, the day before we moved several states away. So....we couldn't do much with it. We gave most of it to my MIL. In my mind, I was like,"Thanks, but WTF?"
I left spare lightbulbs and detailed instructions of where to buy refills of house stuff (it was awful for us to try and figure out!). I was going to leave our buyer a nice little gift but she ended up being a huge bitch and was a nightmare at closing. She ended up sending me a certified letter asking for $12k in additional repairs after the closing. Yeah right, bitch! Note she had signed a "hold harmless" agreement lol...

That's very sweet. Our sellers left is with the image of their old asses walking around naked after they exclaimed that was the reason they loved the in-glass blinds on the sliding doors.

We always leave something for our buyers. Usually a bottle of champagne and a list of useful information about the house. We even did for the last ones and I really disliked them. I was going to send them a magazine cutting the previous owner gave us of the house but I'm keeping it. They were douchebags.
ETA the most important bit: CONGRATULATIONS!!!! : )
I really wanted to do this for our buyers, but I had already left the state and DH had his hands full. We made sure our realtor gave them instructions for the house (e.g. a map of the circuit breakers and the sprinkler controls) and a note telling them that we hoped they'd love the place like we did and listing some fun things to look forward to, like the 4th of July block party and the red tailed hawks on the fence. I think our realtor also gave them a gift certificate to a great local restaurant within walking distance. We didn't expect anything in return.
That is super nice! When we bought our house the sellers left us... a HUGE trash pile full of bulky items that blocked part of the driveway. AND the garage full of more crap. We had to move it out of the way in order to move in. These things were NOT THERE when the realtor and I did the final walk-through that morning just before closing. They came to closing late.
However, I had the BEST agent. When I called him to let him know, he got a hold of the seller's agent and they both came down to help us get it cleared out quickly. He also went down to town hall while we were unloading to apply for a special trash pickup so that we didn't have to deal with it.

That's adorable! The sellers of our house invited us over one afternoon while they still lived in the house so they could walk through with us and explain things. Sometimes you get above and beyond sellers.
We moved last year. Our seller left us a super clean house (she had cleaners come), which was the best gift possible!
The people who bought our house didn't seem like big drinkers, so I left them ice cream from a local ice cream place in the freezer along with ice cream bowls, scoop & some spoons. It was July, I figured it would be a nice way to take a break while moving in! They wrote me a very sweet thank-you card.
