H has been talking about going to the Faroe Islands for the longest time. I'm going to book tickets for him for his birthday (late April), but I'm a little hesitant to go right at the beginning of tourist season since we'll miss the penguins and it still might be super rainy.
Also, about 4-5 days seems like enough time if we'll be doing a little hiking and sightseeing, right?
I know that he'll have a blast planning this trip, so I may just buy the airfare and let him do the rest of the planning.
I haven't been, but one of my officemates is Faroese, so I asked for his advice:
Have heard a lot of tourists have booked hotels in March 2015 for looking at eclipse.
The parliament opens after summer vacation on 29. July and that is the biggest summer festival. A lot of people gather in the capital often dressed in national costumes (similar to 17. Mai). People walk up and down the main street, meet old friends and talk. At midnight people in thousands like to sing in the center of the town.
On the longest day (around 20. June) people like to go to a high mountain to watch the sunset and sunrise and sing.
This year we went to Mykines in July at we saw the puffins. It is possible to walk quite close to them – think less than 2 meters.
There can be no guaranties for weather, but usually June and July are best in the sense of less rain and warmer temperature. Some tourists like it in the winter for experiencing more noisy weather with storm, foamy seashore and waves slammed high up on the cliffs.
I would recommend Mykines.
For hiking there are many routes to go. Vágar, the island with the airport and where I am from, has the two largest lakes. One example of walking could be from Gásadalur via Fjallavatn to Vatnsoyrar. The north east islands are also worth a visit as they are different and more steep.
Excursions with boat can be done on the lake next to the airport: www.lakeside.fo/
Just wanted to say thanks, GilliC! I ended up giving H a gift certificate for Christmas for the Faroe Islands, so he could choose when we go. We just booked for July.

I'm pretty excited!
Awesome! I expect to hear about it when you get back!
