Clearly some work needs to be done on the whole "people are people" thing. Sigh. An opportunity for growth I guess!
Keep in mind it's okay for kids to notice different skin colors. Teaching color blindness isn't the goal. It's totally fine that she notices when someone has brown skin. You want to teach her that we are all people deserving of kindness and respect, for sure, but you can do that while acknowledging someone might have a different skin tone than she does.

Oh, for sure. I meant the whole "they're my favorite" thing. As though she's speaking about a pet or something. We've actually had a lot of conversations re: race and color because she's had a lot of questions.Â
LOL. Yes, that's a good point.
I'm sure I've got some similar conversations ahead. I once asked a lady in a wheelchair for a ride in her stroller, so karma being what it is I fully expect some future cringing.
This was not a great parenting moment LOL. Okay, so when Lu was 2.5 (and recently potty trained), my parents and I stopped in Elko, NV for a night on the way to Sun Valley from Tahoe. They got a place with a pool so Lu could splash around. Which, thank Christ, because it was literally 100 degrees at 5pm when we checked in. Aren't you glad I am providing this utterly pointless back story? ANYWAYS.
So, because she was recently potty trained she generally would give about three seconds of notice that she had to go to the bathroom. So, we're sitting there on the side of the pool and she says "I have to go potty RIGHT NOW!" and my choices were either have her pee in the pool or pee on the concrete next to the pool. Literally, those were my choices. So, I figured the pool at least has chemicals so I whisper to her "just pee in the pool, Lu."
Well, a mom nearby starts screaming EVERYONE GET OUT OF THE POOL! That woman just told her daughter to PEE IN THE POOL ON PURPOSE!! while Lu is just squatting there peeing away. Cue people freaking the fuck out. Then this guy walks over and is all, "Ma'am, the pool needs to be closed and shock treated because of what happened here" (like this was a nuclear incident). When I explained how swim diapers work and that babies are being in the pool CONSTANTLY (plus, apparently 52% of MLers) he was like, "That may well be true but as a certified blah blah blah I am required by State law to close the facility."
So, at this point my mom and I are like, "Okay, let's just get the fuck out of here." So we pick up our stuff and notice we can't find the room key. Lucy is standing there looking guilty. We ask her about it and she said that when the lady was yelling, she threw the key over the fence into the bushes. So, we spent the next 10 minutes locating the goddamn key while everyone just stood around staring at us.
And, I am not even joking, at dinner at the hotel restaurant that night someone pointed us and said "That's the mom that told her daughter to pee in the pool!"
This is amazing.
But also, I used to work in elko. I think Lu was just traumatized by being there. I get it. Lol
