Despite having chronic hypertension (was on medication for this prior to getting pregnant) and gestational diabetes my doctors let me go slightly past my due date to 40w3d I know when I first got pregnant I was a little nervous already starting out with hypertension, and I wasn't sure if I'd make it full term...I hope this helps someone out there who may be in the same/similar situation realize it's possible
Now on with my birth story...
At 40w1d I went to my 40 week appointment to find out that I was only 1cm dilated, not effaced, and baby was still pretty high up...OB said that even though my numbers (blood pressure, blood sugars, and NST) were perfect and baby was still doing great that she was thinking they should induce me since I had both hypertension and GD. She consulted with one of the other OBs in the practice and they agreed that I should be induced since they didn't want to let me continue and possibly chance my or the baby's health.
We arrived at L&D the following night (Wednesday, 11/19) at 6:30pm, and the on call OB placed the Cervidil at 7:15pm. Afterwards H & I sat around chatting and watching TV for a few hours, and I ended up going to sleep around 10:00pm. I was having some contractions throughout the night, but they were really manageable and I was able to get quite a bit of sleep regardless.
The next morning (Thursday, 11/20) the nurse removed the Cervidil at 6:15am (Thursday, 11/20), then I showered real quick before getting hooked back up to the monitors so they could start Pitocin at 7:15am. My contractions picked up right away, and my OB came in to check me at 8:30am. I was only about 1.5cm dilated, so she broke my water at 8:47am to try to help get things moving along.
It wasn't long after that, that I started having pretty strong contractions because in addition to breaking my water they also kept upping the dose on the Pitocin. I was doing pretty good on my own until around 10:00am when they upped my dose of Pitocin again. At that point, my contractions were about 55 seconds long and about 1 minute and 25 seconds apart so I asked for the epidural.
They placed the epidural around 10:30am, and everything was fabulous after that, lol By 12:55pm I was 4-5cm, 80% effaced and baby was 0 station. I was really really happy to hear that I was finally making some progress! My OB came in periodically to check on me over the next several hours, and by 5:00pm I was 9cm and pretty much fully effaced, baby was also now +1 station.
Around 5:45pm I mentioned to the nurse that I was feeling a lot more pressure, so she checked me and said I could try pushing to see if we could get baby to come down a bit more. I started pushing around 6:00pm, then shortly before 7:00pm I was a little frustrated with what I thought was lack of progress (I was getting hungry!)...It was the end of shift for my nurse at 7pm though, so I actually had a different nurse come in and she suggested that I roll on my side to see if that would help. Baby started coming down much easier in that position, but then eventually with each contraction they were seeing deceleration in her heart rate...so I had to go back to my back again.
At 7:30pm I started getting the chills, and felt like I had a fever. I also suddenly felt like I was going to throw up...which I did Finally at 8:02pm our little Baby G was born weighing 8lbs 12oz, and 21 1/4" long They thought she ingested a little meconium, so they were checking her out and cleaning her up a little bit, weighing her, etc. while the doctor stitched me up (I had a 2nd degree tear). She didn't have any issues from the meconium, and her blood sugars were great so they placed her skin to skin with me, however, we both had slight fevers
They gave both of us antibiotics, and had to do a 48hr. blood culture on her to make sure she wasn't fighting an infection of some sort, so we had to stay at the hospital for the full 48 hours. We came home Saturday night, and while I'm still working through some questions I have with breastfeeding, and she doesn't like to sleep anywhere except on me I think we've been doing pretty great for the most part
TL/DR: After a successful and pretty straightforward induction, Baby G was born on 11/20 at 8:02pm weighing 8lbs 12oz and 21 1/4" long.
