I found a coat on a Citibike (bikeshare bike) on Monday. This isn't the first time I've found lost stuff on a Citibike, so I did what I always do -- called Citibike and gave them the station info and bike number so they could track the most recent user down. In theory, they then call the user and give them my phone number so we can arrange for the person to pick up the item from me. Citibike told me to take the coat, and I did.
Having not heard anything from Citibike or the owner, I just called back to see if Citibike had found the person. They haven't, and can't (it was a one-ride user so they don't have a phone number, and they don't maintain a lost and found pile or whatever). No-one has called looking for it.
I should just donate the coat to a coat drive or thrift shop, right? There's no other brilliant way to find the owner? I can't imagine that NYPD has a city-wide lost and found... bigger fish to fry.

You've already gone much farther out of our way than many would I'd maybe hold onto it for another week, just in case because I suppose the holiday could have kept the owner from looking for it. Then I'd donate.
I'd give it a little more time, because of the holiday. It hasn't been that long and maybe the person is having a tough time remembering where they last had the coat.
