I did with my first pregnancy, simply because I was already getting an u/s and they did both 2 & 3d. While they were decent, I would wait longer if possible.
My mom did one on me when I was 17 weeks. She said that usually at 16/17 weeks they can look very skeletal and kind of scary looking. Fortunately for me, I'm carrying a blimp and he already had some meat on his bones, so our pictures actually came out quite good.
If you have to pay for them, I'd wait a little longer (22 weeks would be good). You'll get much better pictures.
We got some 3D images at our anatomy scan, just shy of 19 weeks. We got some really good pictures of him, so I don't think it's super early, but you might wait a few more weeks if you can, since they change so much every week.

We did an elective gender scan at 15.5 weeks and they switched to 3d for a bit. It was a bit...creepy lol, and I'm not one normally creeped out by 3d ultrasounds. I'd wait a bit if I were you.
We went at 16w for an elective gender scan. They showed us the 3D but said it's not as cute becuase they are fat yet we went back for a 3D around 29w and it was much cuter!

I would wait. I had mine done at 28 wks and while we got some good ones, it's harder for the tech if bbay doesn't want to cooperate with positioning (as bunny pointed out to us). They suggested to wait until 34 weeks+ for the best shots. I wanted them done before my shower so I could share them with everyone. I don't regret it. I am still thinking about doing one last minutes session while I'm still pregnant.
With my son I was in a car accident around that time and they flipped the 3D on when they checked the baby.
He was...not cute. I was sobbing and scared and all I could think to say was "I hope he gets cuter before he's born." He looked like Voldemort, with no nose.
My mom is taking us to get an elective US to find out the sex early. I wanted to get a better idea if we should do 3d or just 2d. I told her baby will most likely look like an alien on 3d at this point and she says she still wants to do the 3d. I'm just excited to see baby either way even if it's not cute at this point. Lol.
