Update from today's conversation with potential boss... sounds like I might not hear anything before Christmas But highlights of the conversation:
- Everybody liked me (including one person who I really couldn't read). He's going to talk to one more person I met with tomorrow, but she seems nice and easygoing and I thought we hit it off so I can't imagine she'd be an issue.
- He is interviewing 2 people on Monday at the recommendation of HR. He says they do not look as good on paper as I do, but he wants to give them a fair shot (which is fair and nice of him). He is the only person they're interviewing with -- he's interviewing them in the city (where they're located) rather than where the job will be located because he doesn't want to get their hopes up by bringing them out to the burbs and having them meet with other people. So that doesn't sound *bad* but I wish he wasn't being fair and nice to them (He had fought against having the job posted at all, but HR insisted when I was brought in for interviews -- I think it has only been posted for a week).
- He had to push to get the background check started this week because the offer isn't imminent, but he wants things to move fast.
- He'll definitely be in touch again before the new year, but even in the best-case scenario things may slow down with the holiday. And if these other people turn out to be contenders, it would be slower.
The friend who put me in touch with this guy, and who works very closely with him and the president of the company (who told her after we talked that he liked me and thinks I would fit in well), will be in town this weekend and I'm seeing her on Saturday (and possibly tomorrow too) so I will be prodding her for all intel she can possibly share that she hasn't already.
Background checks are typically done AFTER the offer and the offer is contingent upon successful completion. So it seems like you are definitely getting an offer.
My H just had to wait for his background check to clear before getting an offer. It took 2 days for his background to clear then another week for HR to send the offer over. Verbal offer was given right after background check.
ETA: I think you are getting the offer if they are doing the background check.

Well, here it may be a bit different because they started the process before I was done interviewing because they didn't want the background check to hold up a start date. But I think that means at least that the person who would be my boss thinks he wants to hire me?
I didn't think that Monday was the best interview of my life, so I'm taking the fact that they're running the background check right now (I also got an email from the HR person about it) as a sign that the Monday people wanted me to move forward. Today's interview definitely went really, really well... so fingers crossed! But I'm trying to not get my hopes up because, you know...
I typically have gotten offers before the background check is complete and there's often wording about it being tentative pending the check coming back clean.
Congrats on getting so far! Is this a different company than A & B from the other day? It's like opportunities are raining down on you all of a sudden after looking for so long. Feast or famine, right?
This is company B from the other day.
But yes, definitely feast or famine! (Though to be fair, nothing has actually worked out yet).
This position has a few flaws -- it is in the suburbs so I'd have to commute and there would be a ton of travel involved. But it is meant to be a huge growth opportunity, the company is interesting and healthy and is supposed to be fantastic to work for (and my friend confirms that), and everyone I've met with seems like they'd be great to work with (which my friend also confirms). So I can learn to commute...
I know you are looking to get out of big law. DH made the transition recently and I'm not sure if the job has anything to do in the legal/financial field, but DH started the background checks for his current job before he received the official offer. Because of the nature of his work, he had to do 2 separate background checks, 3 sets of fingerprints and submit a certificate of good standing from the state bar. The company did comment that since he was in the system from the state bar check several years ago his check came back much faster than expected.
So this is the top choice one, right? The met-in-a-coffee-shop, made-the-job-for-you, call-me-if-you-get-close-to-another-offer one? So exciting!
And clearly I am overinvested in your job search, LOL. I'm just sympathetic to desperately searching for a new position. Fingers crossed that everything comes through really soon!
Yup, that one! Thanks for your overinvestment people's kind thoughts really have meant a lot!
I *think* I could still gbcn from company b. Definitely not from company a (open workspace).
This really depends on the company they use for background check and how many places a person has lived/worked and where they are. I know they can come back in a couple of days or a few weeks depending on how backed up the courts are, whether employers answer the phone, if your school is open to verify your degree, etc.
Most employers probably don't run a background check unless they intend to hire you. It costs money and often involves contacting past employers, so it's not a good idea unless they are serious. As far as the offer goes, both places I've been involved in this, we offer verbally THEN run a background check, and often get the writtne offer in place before we hear back on the background. IF they fail the background, we can always rescind the offer (ETA: the language in the offer states that it is contingent on passing the background check, of course).

I have always received an offer contingent in background check. But the background check had never started first. Either way, I think all signs are positive for you- good luck!!
It just seems so backwards to do it any other way, but sure enough, my husband just told me yesterday about someone at his Fortune 500 company who was escorted out of new employee training after the background check company learned the guy lied on his resume about having a degree. How does someone get an offer, a start date and actually start before that's all confirmed? I think it's so odd.
My neighbor lies about having a degree from a well known and loved state school. She works for an establishment owned by a Fortue 500 company. She only admits the lie when drunk.
I didn't start my background check until after I got my offer and it took forever. And since they wanted me to start on a certain day, I couldn't give as much notice as I wanted to to my firm.
It is a company in the industry I represent, but it is a company that you probably wouldn't know of unless you knew that industry well. Definitely not a household name.
