I would look into unemployment benefits before you give up. I don't know much about it, but it seems like they will have a hard time getting away with cutting hours to avoid it.

I'm so sorry--what a terrible situation. Thought I'd comment to say that I do have a friend in Colorado who was partially furloughed awhile back, and she did qualify for unemployment. I remember her saying that she had to fill out the unemployment paperwork, and then if the amount that they determined she qualified for was greater than the amount she was making working the reduced hours at her job, she received a payment for the difference (i.e. she qualified for $500ish a week, but was making $200/week with her reduced hours, so she received an additional payment for $300/week from unemployment).
Hopefully, that's still the case!
ETA- She was a federal employee, not sure if that makes a difference in this circumstance.
