We are probably buying DH a tablet on Saturday. We'll have limited options, because it'll be bought at the PX on base, as he needs it ASAP, and we can't be sure anything ordered online will arrive before we move. I have no idea what options they will have, unfortunately, and won't until we see them in person.
Any suggestions of things/features to look for/avoid?
I know he will want to be able to load Office on it (we already have a license for it). He will probably want it to have at least one USB port. If it's one that can be wifi or 3G, we might opt to include it in our cell data plan once we return to the US, but that is not a critical element (we could always piggyback off our cell phones themselves).
The Microsoft Surface is supposed to be REALLY good. Especially for doing work/using office applications, etc. I'm not sure if the BX sells it or not. Any way you could order from Amazon and get expedited shipping?
ETA: D'oh! Of course you can't if you're overseas. I feel ya. I think the PX might have the Surface though. If the do, I think that's the one you want.
We use iPads, iPad minis, nexus 7s, and nexus 10s at work. No one likes the Nexus tablets. I'd rather not have a tablet than use a Nexus one.
I like our Nexus 7, but I don't use Office-like applications on it. If you plan to create a document or spreadsheet, definitely get a 10" screen. I have also heard that the new Surfaces are actually better than previous models (now much closer to a full computer in a tiny package).
I just bought a Lenovo Yoga Pro for school. A few of my classmates have the Surface Pro, but for the same price, mine has more power and a little larger screen. Best thing is this s under 3 lbs.
Only thing I hate about it is Windows 8. Apparently there is a Win 7 shell you can put on it to make the OS look like Win 7.

I do this (on a regular laptop). It was lifechanging. I use Classic Shell.
I really want a Yoga Pro - maybe when DH can get a discount.
I scored mine on Thanksgiving. I had been looking at computers since Oct. and by holding off for the Black Friday sales, I saved nearly $300.
