Do you have a smoke alarm in each bedroom (specifically each child's room) or just in the hallways or somewhere outside their room?
How many do you have per floor?
We rent and have one in the basement and one for the main floor that's in the hallway leading to both bedrooms. We also have one on the second floor that is basically a bonus room/large storage room. So 3 total. I think we need more on the main floor at least. It's a small house but still. Our landlords should provide them right?
There wasn't a CO detector here when we moved in and I insisted on one. I thought it was the law to have them now? Maybe it varies by state.
FIL was a firefighter, I'm a former property insurance underwriter, my DH is a type A engineer. We have a bajillion detectors. One in every bedroom and then in the hallway, I think four on the first floor, two or three in the basement, one in the garage. One on each floor is hardwired. Our home is 2200 square feet and it's probably overkill but I don't care.
We also have fire extinguishers on every floor including a huge one upstairs that will give us extra time if we need it. DH checks the detectors on the first of every month, replacing all batteries in everything on 1/1 every year.
Fwiw, a simple smoke detector is so cheap. Like, $5 at Home Depot.
We have a CO detector on each floor, a smoke detector in each bedroom, in the main hall and in each room on the first floor. The previous owners installed them in the bathrooms but we have disconnected those due to the humidity making them go haywire.
When we renovated, we were required by code to install them in each bedroom and outside any sleeping areas. We probably have 7 or 8 in our house (all one level). We were also required to have them all hardwired together so that if one goes off, they all go off.
