I hate when people say it's the thought that counts. Nope my MIL routinely buys me the most assholish passive aggressive gifts you can imagine. I don't have to be thankful for that.
On the other hand DH grandmother hasn't been well. She sent is a basket of food we will never touch. It was so thoughtful and I was very touched.
When you just give someone crap because you are "too busy" for anything else there is no thought behind it. So it's not the thought that counts.

Like when my mom handed me a post it note for my birthday with her debit card # on it and told me I could spend up to $100? Yes I'm grateful i get to spend $100 because you could've given me nothing but seriously? That's a thoughtless and shitty "gift." Next time just don't get me anything

Agreed. It depends on the situation and the person.
Your MIL nope
but CnA & her gift card & brownie jar, yes.
I stress sometimes about getting the perfect gift. I know there is no such thing & that people will be happy with a gift card or pottery painted by Z.

Oh I disagree. I love money! That would have been the best gift ever!

CNA this isn't about you.
I hate the thought that teachers should just he appreciative of any type of crap they receive. I also can't understand why anyone in their right mind thinks teachers want an apple ornament with #1 teacher on it.
I would rather have a FREE handwritten thank you note than some stupid crayon wreath with my name anyday.

The wasn't spurred by cna's brownie in a jar post, I swear.
On a local mom's FB group, there are seriously 34857359067390876390 questions about what to get teachers. Teachers always respond a note, and if you really want to a gift card. Gift cards are easy. They are desired. So why make it more difficult? I just don't get it.

This post is not about CNA but she said she got the brownie instead of the GC.
Isn't that the point of the saying though? It IS the thought that counts. (or thoughtless)
IMO I think there is a difference between someone being passive aggressive in a gift and a terrible gift giver. MY FIL is awful at gift giving. But it is sweet he tries. He isn't being thoughtless about it. You know?
If I get a crap gift on purpose (which has never really happened tbh)- yes, you suck!

There's back story that makes this just downright shitty

Oh DH used to be horrible at gifts but no it still wasn't the thought that counts. If you really know someone and really think about them it's not that hard to find a good gift.

I don't think gifts besides GCs are not thoughtful for teachers -- just stop stressing yourself out trying to be thoughtful! They love gift cards! It's easy!

And the crazy thing is this day in age it's easier to be thoughtful than not. Seriously every Friday when I drop my kids off the PE coach has a sonic drink and music teacher Starbucks one stop at the Walgreens GC stand and I am done.

Seriously I shop at three name brand stores, always have a Starbucks (my status symbol) and my kindle with me. My MIL literally has to go out of her way to find something I won't like.
My UO - I don't like those jar gifts. You can buy a box/bag of brownie or cookie mix for $1 or $2. It's weird to stick it in a jar and pass on as a gift! lol

They eek me out because I just assume all of the ones you buy in stores are like 10 years old
I love a good gift basket. Full of crap that no one else eats or uses. I love it all. Hot chocolate packets, candles, spa bath crystals, little chocolates, blocks of cheese. My inlaws own a hair salon and always give me the baskets they get as gifts and I am in heaven. I may be the only one in the whole world. I'm not ashamed.

She could have at least put the effort into going to the ATM and pull out cash to hand you.

Me too! I adore gift baskets. My previous work used to get inundated with then around the holidays. I was "squeeee-ing" all month long.
