I have a painful spot on the outside of my aerola. It's slightly red and a little swollen. About the size of a dime. I don't have a fever or any other symptoms. This week, I dropped my MOTN pumping session and although g has not been sttn, I've been going 5-6 hours at a time without pumping/feeding.
Any ideas on what this is or what I should do? I'm supposed to head to my parents' house this weekend for christmas, fwiw.
I never had redness with a plugged duct, but it could still be just that.
Do you feel off? Fever?
The location has be concerned. My plugged ducts were usually deeper, and higher up, or lower.
If you get a fever, call your OB or get yourself into urgent care ASAP. I had mastitis twice, and felt like I had been hit by a truck. The redness started, I felt off, went in to see DS's pedi (my lactation consultant), she said my temp was 99+, prescribed antibiots, and said she was sure I would take a turn for the worse in 24 hrs, then feel like a new person. Truth. That night I was in agony with a fever and aches.
Keep an eye on it!
Sorry you're experiencing discomfort.
For clogged ducts, I found that kneading my fingers tips and even a very blunt comb into the area helped a ton. Some find relief with hot showers and squeezing, but I always had to knead them hard/deep for relief.
Ditto clogged duct. I got rid of mine pretty easily and wish the same for you! I took some ibuprofen, took a hot shower while massaging it, then did a dangle feed. Put some lotion on and massaged some more. It was gone within two feedings.
I've also heard that pressing an electric toothbrush or vibrator on the plug can loosen it up.

mastitis is accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
Another vote for clogged duct. Try wet heat, massage towards the nipple during feeding or pumping and Ibuprofen for pain. Really what worked best for me was wet heat and then massaging during feed. It does feel amazing when it finally unplugs itself
CloudBee - I thought the location was odd as well. I feel fine but will keep a close eye on it. G has croup and isn't nursing well so I think I'll pump and massage after I put a hot compress on it.
Take a super hot shower and massage the area. Then pump and massage as you pump That usually does it for me. I had a bad one earlier and filled a bowl with hot water and dangled my boob in while massaging and expressing. It iimmediately helped.
I had a plugged duct today and pumping at work and massaging didn't do it. When I came home I took a hot shower then did a dangle feeding and it cleared up almost immediately.

Is it on your areola or off?
I had a spot on my areola that was raised and painful about the size of a pea. It was an infected Montgomery duct that needed antibiotics. Doc said clogged ducts don't show up on the areola like that.

Just barely off. My aerola are huge, though.
It's slightky better after pumping every 2 hours overnight, several hot showers, and tons of massage yesterday evening. Still not gone, though. :/
Plugged ducts can hurt for 2-3 days even if you've broken up the clog. When I had one recently I did lots of massaging, fed first on that side, used heat when pumping, but I didn't pump overnight at all. I did have some redness which is definitely possible with a plugged duct; mastitis is only a concern if you have those flu-like symptoms.

Good luck; I hope it feels better soon!
This is good to know, thanks! How did you know when you had broken up the clog? I still can't tell if I have or not.
Thanks - I don't think I still have a knot, but it still hurts and is so red. I'll keep up with what I've been doing today and hopefully it'll start feeling better. I was hoping for immediate relief once I got it cleared.
Inspect your nipple, I've had a few clogged ducts that are the result of a milk blister on my nipple, which was surprisingly hard to spot. Once I broke open the blister, the clog resolved itself much faster.
I always had red marks and usually for plugged ducts in the are between boob and armpit.
You can take lechitin if you notice it happening often. That helped me a lot. And a little ibuprofen for the pain. I wouldn't pump overnight bc I like sleep, but definitely pump and nurse a ton all day.
The redness is closer to my areola/nipple but does extend back towards my armpit too. That part seems to have gotten worse but it feels less tender to the touch. How long after it felt better did the redness start to go away?

Is this a pill? I get them at least once a week and hate it.
