MAybe it's my resting bitch face but I never get the kind of engagement some of you are mentioning. That's very nice.
My mom loved her old garbage man. He would often take extra stuff for her so she would give him $20. She never gave gc at Christmas but I suppose it's all the same.
Um I don't either. But we never see our garbage men and the UPS guy is back in the truck before I can open the door. I kind of shocked that any just stand around to shoot the shit, our are crazy busy all the time.
I used to wait tables and regular customers would give me a bigger tip, a batch of cookies, an ornament whatever at Christmas time. It was a sweet gesture and I appreciated it. No one is saying it's the law of the land to tip/gift service people you know personally, but there's nothing wrong with those who do.

Everyone knows what you are taking about its still weird.

Yes, this is how it is with ours. We share the dumpster with the immigrant workers so when they went back to Mexico and had extra stuff from cleaning our their house when they left he dumped the dumpster twice--filling it up the second time himself. He didn't have to do that, but he did. If he's going to be out he alwayss lets us know and tell us there is going to be a sub. I mean, he's just a nice guy.

But then why not go make the man some cookies that day? I'm just confused as to how doing an awesome job= christmas presents. So he dumped your trash twice one day in May and you wait until December to say thank you via a Hickory Farm meat tray.
And really, do whatever you (the royal you) want. It's not my money. I do hate that it means people sort of expect to get something. You can say it doesn't, but the story someone just told of being a SLP and getting $25 from a family that probably couldn't afford it tells me otherwise. It just adds stress for a lot of people during an already crazy time. And again, I mildly actually care about this because I'm not giving gc or meat trays to anyone other than DDs teacher.
This is what I don't get. So he did something super great and over the top once. Why not tip him then?

I really don't understand why this is a big deal. If people want to rain money or meat trays on their trash guy/UPS guy/hairdresser/dog groomer, who cares? It's her money. I'm sure the trash guy is not side eyeing the other houses on the block for not handing him smoked meat, so what difference does it make? Don't tip them or give gifts if you don't want to. Some people want to. I'm sorry if that makes others feel obligated, but that's on them.

Let's put it this way -- I am obsessed with DS1's SLP. I'd spend my last $25 on a gift for her.
Not my posse of fed ex guys.
Trash guys I get in certain communities. I am totally fixated on the fed ex thing though. We don't even have a regular fed ex dude at work.

Then how the fuck is that not the same as me giving my kids all their gifts from Santa and people getting their nose out of joint on Facebook because of poor kids?

It's not. But if that pisses you off, then why are you so up in arms about someone else's gift giving choices? It's a bit hypocritical, don't you think?

More than anything I am invested in this because I have a 12 hour drive ahead of me and I need entertained. But really I do think this has all gone too far. I am still baffled that people have conversations with their delivery men. Maybe because everything I get comes from UPS. Maybe it's FED EX who takes their time to get to know their families;)

Are you new? We've had fights about fruit snacks, pouches, and freaking dandelions. Yeah, fed ex men are totally fair game. I'm home sick with 2 sick kids and a sick H, this is my escape from peg plus cat.
Or shall we discuss the war on women, racial discrimination and how Fox News and CNN have ruined the news.
Or table clothes. That's always an option too. I'm completely open.
Y'all can argue over whatever you want, but if you bitch at people for how they choose to give gifts, then also bitch about people telling you how to give gifts, do you not find that pretty stupid?

I find most conversations on this board stupid. HTH. And here you are in the conversation telling us how dumb we are for arguing so....
I'm all for arguing. I'm in the argument, am I not? I'm just not on your side of it, mostly because I don't understand why it's a big deal.

I not so much up in arms as about giving it as I am the general "how could you not give it" vibe.
Our garbage man will dump our trash twice if we have more than what fills the dumpster. He's never late or misses a day. Always stops to chat if he sees us out.
Our UPS man hides our packages behind our rocking chair, helps me get large packages in, and is overall a nice guy.
When we moved, the owners before us never had a mailbox so for a while our mail was all screwy. Our route driver would be sure we got our mail, even if it was the wrong address. If we got a package that is too big to fit he will bring it to us instead of making us come to the PO.
See the UPS and mail person make sense but I am dumbfounded you tip the garbage guy because he doesn't miss any days. So now we tip people for.doing what they already get paid for? Sorry that's ridiculous.
Several times this year we've had big furniture we need to get rid of. We've always put it at the curb and advertised on Craigslist that it's free as is, curb-side. No one has taken any of the furniture. And each and every single time, instead of us having to haul it to the dump, our garbage men have taken the furniture (even though they're technically not supposed to). We would have hauled the stuff to the dump later in the week as we have a trailer for home improvement stuff anyway.
Also, when we've been snowed in, or not plowed enough for the garbage truck to get down our street, since there's only 2 houses, they've come and dragged our garbage cans to be emptied, and then brought them back.

Perhaps I missed something, but I haven't gotten that vibe. People have been explaining why they give because others jumped all over them for "excessive" gift-giving practices.

See but they went above and beyond repeatedly I get a that. But for just doing their job? Nope!

And if you are trying to calling out Amy for her christmas/ Santa stuff you might want to just tag her.

But then it wouldn't be a passive aggressive call out.

Nope, just don't feel like digging back to call out every person who voiced their dislike of the "moderate your gifts" lady and then said giving gifts to UPS was weird or stupid. There's a few.

Because apparently we're dumbasses if we tip people for doing their jobs and/or we are creating a culture where everyone thinks they are entitled to tips and presents because they do their jobs. /sarcasm
I'll tip the people I want if I want to, be they my garbage man or UPS guy. I give zero fucks if someone here thinks I'm an idiot for doing so. Just because you don't know or ever see your garbage man or UPS man doesn't mean we don't see ours. You know who bags your groceries? I don't think any of our stores have baggers, unless it's mad slow, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've had the same cashier this year.

Yep I know the guy Jason at our grocery store he is a sophomore and is majoring in economics. He finally decided to get his dad a new electric razor for Christmas. He is amazingly nice and i choose his line when I can. I still didn't tip him.
Like I said if they go above and beyond like your garbage man then great I get the tip thing but for doing their job? Nope!
And laugh out fucking loud that I can't have an opinion that it's stupid but you can have one that it's cool to tip everyone.

AG, the difference is that you guys are saying it's stupid and then calling everyone who does it stupid. The people who tip don't give a fuck if others do the same or not.

Yeah -- Eagles is my real life actual friend. I never called her stupid. So no.
