Maybe this is a day late UO, but I think gift giving has become a bragging right for some people.
Yep.
Just like people (I've seen a few posts referring to it here) and on FB make a point to only give three gifts, or under a certain amount of money, not for financial reasons, but to make a point not to spoil their kids, right?
Have you seen the video about the little boy and the UPS man's friendship? That's basically us, including the special milk delivery. I give our's a thank you Christmas card and a GC. DS1 is always so excited to give it to him. Both boys love him, he hides our boxes, brings them inside the house for me and shows me pictures of his grand kids. He is more helpful and I like him better than most family.

I also think it adds to the mommy martyrdom some ladies thrive on "ugh, I still have to get the gift for the mail man and the fed ex man and find the four locally sourced organic wool scarves for Persephone's teachers And I am so busy please validate me."

Oh I have long claimed those people are also the worst.

I believe UPS drivers with good routes do make about 6 figures but it takes years to get there. Fed Ex employs a lot of contractors who make less. This is what our awesome, champagne recieving, UPS driver told me a few years back.
How on earth do you tip your garbage man? Do you wait for them and run out with it? Leave it on the garbage can? I'm trying to picture how this would even work. Ours come at the crack of dawn although not always. It's pretty my a crap shoot when they actually get here. It never once occurred to me to tip them.
I am part of the grinch camp. No tips for most of the people mentioned. We have multiple ups/fed ex, even multiple mail carriers. Sometimes it a different one every day.

Long ago, when we lived in our apartment with the door that faced the street, we had the best UPS guy ever. He knew when we came home and would schedule our drop-offs later in the evening so our stuff wouldn't be stolen and we wouldn't have to go pick it up at the facility later. A few times he came around a second time because no one was home the first time. We tipped him $20 at Christmas. When he got transferred to a different route, he stopped over to tell us and say goodbye. My uncle had a similar relationship with his garbage man, who was also a Kansas State fan and would stop for a few minutes to chat about the game every week. It's pretty cool when you get someone like that.
Of course, now we have a different mail carrier every day and all of them suck, our package people all run away so fast that I've never seen them and often deliver packages to the wrong addresses, and our garbage guys don't even get out of the truck, so they're not on my Christmas list.
I guess I'm confused b/c it's nothing new to tip USPS, UPS or FedEx - if you have someone who has gone above and beyond for you. My parents sometimes did it 25 years ago. But my dad was also a letter carrier for a few years, so perhaps that was part of it. Our UPS guy was the same for years and years - even took a puppy when our dog had them, knew all of our names, etc.
Our UPS guy is the same for a year or 2 then switches. Letter carrier has been the same for about 2-3 years. He's awesome and I feel bad b/c I usually forget to get him something. Not b/c I have to but he's really great and kind to us. But we see him a lot b/c he's on a walking route and delivers to my door and often right to me.

Yes, this. I remember my grandparents tipping the mail person. I think if anything, it is getting less common not more common.
This is completed ridiculous and out of control. I also don't buy a gift for our trash guy, recycling guy, paper guy, the lady who checks me out at the grocery store, ped, oBgyn, or anyone else seriously.
It would be pretty funny to see a Pinterest take on how you should "package" your tip for your OBGYN.
Our guy is awesome. He always hides our stuff behind the arches on our porch (apparently there was some theft here earlier in the year) and so I feel like that is cool of him.
I am giving him all the fudge I make. He smelled (and commented on)it when he delivered stuff the past 3 days....so I made him a big plate.

We will give our fed-ex guy a bottle of liquor (on Christmas Eve). He is DH's uncle. But at least by us unless someone is out and they are covering, it is the same person on the same route.

This is us. I ALWAYS remember my parents tipping the garbage/mail/etc person growing up---and that was 30 years ago!

Am I the only who has no freaking clue who the delivery guy is? I order stuff on a regular basis, but even when they ring the bell, they are already back In the truck driving away before I get to the door. Unless it requires a signature (rare), I've never met them face-to-tace.

I seriously have no idea who mine is they leave a package and run back to the truck not to mention its a different person this time of year with all the seasonal help
We tip the trash guys and give the mailman and UPS guys Wawa gift cards. We don't do it out of obligation or to brag, just because it is always the same people and they are super nice. I appreciate them and it seemed like a nice thing to do

Also, I feel like maybe multiple routes cover my house? There definitely have been days where we get one delivery in the morning and another in the afternoon. On the rare occassions I actually have to sign and see someone, they are always different.

So seriously how do you tip the trash guys? Like you run out there when they are taking your trash and give them GC? And what is wawa?

It isn't hard, I am always up when they come. I just run out and give them a card with money. There are 3 guys so I make sure it is something in 3'a
Wawa is the greatest convenience store ever! Seriously, it's a PA NJ DE MD thing, though they are expanding to FL
I will say when I lived in the city, I didn't tip any of these people because they all sucked. Maybe I was so used to their suckage that it made me appreciate the suburban guys that much more
I was leaving the house one day this summer and happened to see our garbage man using our neighbor's hose for a drink. I ran in and brought him out two bottles of water.....does that count? Just kidding, but I am in the camp of rarely seeing the garbage man, only the backs of delivery mens' heads and no idea if my mail carrier is male or female. I do feel holiday tipping/gifting is out of control and am surprised every year by all the people that get tips/gifts. I am an SLP and when I was working I had a family gift me something around $25 and I felt so bad, because I knew it was a hardship for them (kid receiving scholarship at pre k etc). It was heartwarming they did it, but part of me worried they felt they had to bring a gift, because lots of others in the waiting room were bringing in things.
This is why I think it's so important people realize as a teacher the best gifts I have received and the only ones I still have were hand written thank you notes that cost nothing.
I just think all this holiday giving us out of control.

Lol maybe mine just suck. Seriously though I do have to get out of my car to move my damn trash cans to get in my driveway every damn week. I swear they do it on purpose, maybe because I don't tip?
