DS has been telling us immediately after he poops or pees in his diaper. He has also been sticking his hands down his diaper if we don't change him fast enough. We've caught him a few times when he was about to poop (he gets this look on his face and tries to hide) and we've gotten him to go on the potty. But he still isn't telling us prior to needing to go if he needs to go.
He's 2.5yo this month. He probably needs a little bit more time before we start actively trying to PT, right?

We trained ds at that exact age and he wasn't telling us prior. He trained in 2.5 days. I think the bigger motivation is when a kid doesn't want to be in a soiled diaper. I'd give it a shot.

It depends. DD has been telling us she's about to poop for months but cries if we try and make her go on the potty. No, she wants to poop in her diaper! If he's cool with the potty, I would try a couple days and see. It's sone much the combo of capability and willingness.

He's completely willing to use the potty, we just never make it in time.... like, he's very excited to use it before he takes a bath (even though most times he doesn't go).

Then I'd try and see if it clicks for him. Can't hurt!
I would definitely give it a shot. DS was potty trained by about then. I think he was 2.75 when he was fully trained. Watching dad go was the biggest motivator.
Go for it! Since he's showing some signs and is willing. Ds potty trained right about then too. (But we did dd at like 26 months so he'd been watching her...when we started him I took him like 1.5 days haha!)
