I'm making my Nana's crab cakes for Christmas Eve. It's a new tradition I wanted to start. I don't know what to make for sides. We always ate them in the summer and had corn on the cover and tomato salad but those aren't in season now so I'm not sure what to make.
I'd do a heartier dish, maybe something like creamed corn? Maybe some roasted winter veggies, like zucchini and squash for another side. Cioppino is a seafood stew popular on Christmas Eve, that could also work, though I'd do small portions, like a first course option then move to the crab cakes and sides.
Also VeryViolet you're from Maryland. Does your nana have a recipe we can compare? Lol
My suggestion is as little filler as possible, crushed saltines no bread crumbs, and broil them don't fry.
Ok I know I'm from Virginia but my family goes back at least 2 generations on the eastern shore. psh. I know this man!
I'm kind of thinking about trying panko because I love panko so much but I don't know how nana would feel about that. I don't know if there's a heaven, but I'm nervous about changing it just in case there is one and I have to face her later lol.
ETA that's close to Nana's but she used powdered mustard and old bay
ETA again, after thinking about it I think panko might make them too dense. Sorry Nana, I'll never think of it again!

Another Marylander chiming in. We always use these Old Bay packets www.oldbay.com/Products/Old-Bay-Crab-Cake-Classic-Mix.aspx But I'm sure there's a recipe on the side of the can if you can't find the packet. We also sprinkle more Old Bay on the top of the crab cakes before broiling.
My go-to meal (like when my mom asks me what I want for my bday dinner) is crab cakes and Mac n cheese. If I'm out at a restaurant then it's usually fries or mashed potatoes and a veggie.
Have you thought about doing mini-crab cakes for an appetizer, then a heartier meal instead? I think Summer when I hear crab cakes, but I love them regardless. What about bacon-wrapped asparagus? Rub them w EVOO, S&P. and use thick cut bacon to wrap a few pieces at a time. Bake them at 400 on a raised pan so the drippings fall instead of soaking into the asparagus.
