Ours are in catholic school less than ten minutes drive. The public school is like a 2 minute drive. The bus is about 45 minutes but they'll still take it for our convience as well as the fact that they like it. DD2 isn't allowed on the bus as a prek student so now we drive them both and I can't wait for next year when they can bus it again
It takes us 30 minutes to walk to DD's school (at her pace), 10iah minutes to bike and 20 minutes on the yellow school bus. The distance is manageable, but it sucks that the majority of her friends are not in our neighborhood. I hate that I have to travel for birthday parties and play dates.
Please do not send your child/ren to a Waldorf school for convenience sake.
5 minute drive
Waldorf is off the table. What would I do without this board? We had no idea about the weirdness. The closest ok school is a Friends school, but now I'm scared to ask about Quaker schools!
Quaker schools are awesome. I would love to send my kids to one, but the distance and the ridiculously competitive admissions process deter me.
It's on the way to work. When I drive in it's 7-10 minutes, and then I park and walk about 3-5 minutes to my office. When we bike it's about 15-18 minutes in and 25 minutes back (hills), and I have a 2-3 minute bike ride between daycare and work.
We are in the walk zone for his elementary school ... I just looked up the bell schedule and class starts at 8:40! catbus we've got to start lobbying the board to flip HS and elementary start times!

Our school starts at 9:30. WAY too late! There was a petition going around last year about swapping start times. I know some people were opposed because high school kids have sports, jobs, and some need to be home before their younger siblings. But I think it deserves serious consideration.
No idea for R since we'll move long before he's in school, but growing up I rode the bus for an hour and a half each way starting in kinder. (Was 20-25 minute drive, by car.) This was for public school which also happened to be the closest school. Lots of kids rode an hour or more each way. It's not the most fun ever, but a longer school commute wouldn't make me pick a lesser quality school.
Our elementary school is less than a half mile away, about a 10-minute walk or a 2-minute drive, but it's a 20-minute bus ride. The middle school is 1.5 miles away, and the high school is about 3 miles away.
Our preschool is 3 miles away, about a 10-minute drive. There are closer preschools but this was our first choice.

The kids' school is 1.5 mi away. And H drops them off in the am. About a 10 minute drive. They bus home to the nearest school to us which is less than .5 mi away and I walk to pick them up about 5-10 min.

DS's school is <3 miles away, 5-10 minute drive. It's a public school, but not the one he's zoned for. DD's preschool is about a block away from his school.

Assuming we stay here, my kids will always be able walk to school. The school that is the furthest from our house is 1.6 miles. It is my DD's private school. All of the schools DS will go to are less than a mile. We moved here for this reason.

I have heard good things about yhe friends school in our city, we have friends there and they love it
My DD goes to Friends School. It's amazing. She was in public school before. There individualized leaning program is phenomenal. She has kids in her 3rd grade class who take math with 8th graders, and get assistance with reading. They really do meet each child where they are. The character education is amazing. I am atheist, and have been really impressed. You can PM. I am thinking you might be in ATL.
Daycare is a 15 minute drive away (freeway + surface streets).
The public elementary school we're zoned for is a 2 minute drive down the hill. If we wanted to choose a different elementary school within our district, the likely choices are both in the 15 minute range. For these schools the drive would be all on surface streets.
We are doing Montessori for preschool, and it is about a 20 minute drive. For K-12 we are doing public and it's about 3 or 4 miles down the road. Not sure how long the bus will take, but it takes me less than 5 minutes to drive there (K-12 is all at one place - it's a small rural school).
You guys get bussing for less than a mile??? We don't! Our cut off is 1.6k...that and under they walk. We live on a fairlyish busy road and I don't love the idea of my kids walking it at a young age. Not that it matter, they will have to be in before and after care anyways because of our work hours.
It can also depend on sidewalks/safety guidlines. Our district is rural with no sidewalks, so all kids are bussed in no matter how "close" they are to the school. Really the school sits in farm fields, so there are only a few houses around anyways.

This is totally true here too I think, it's just that I live in suburbia so it isn't an issue.

Preschool is literally 2-3 minutes for driving and about 15 mins when we walk (when the weather is good).
Elementary school will be about the same, just the opposite direction.
Being close and a walkable distance to school was a big factor in our house hunt. The boys will only be 1 grade level apart, so I hope they will be able to walk together once they are older.
It would take longer to drive with the carpool lanes than walk to our elementary school. Maybe a 5-7 minute walk- I've never actually timed it. Daycare is about a 10 minute drive across town.
