I rinse them with water. I always get nervous thinking about this. Damn it, why does the stuff that's healthiest for you have to carry the biggest risk.

Residue. Fruits and veggies are porous, whereas dishes aren't. The soap can absorb into the skin.
Hence why I wash with a bit of soap. I at least scrub to get things off the skin.
If soap chemicals will absorb into the skin after the 20 seconds it's on it, think about animal shit. Fruits on a vine or close to the ground (almost anything not an apple or pear or whatever else grows on trees) are ripe for being pooped on by animals. I don't want to eat poop.

Same here. Worst case, I do end up eating some soap residue, and my insides end up clean and shiny!

I imagine the bacteria from the caramel apple listeria outbreak is from the packaging plant. This bacteria was not found in fresh apples, they were pre-packaged caramel apples. Who knows how the caramel was processed or the condition/cleanliness of the equipment.
Animals don't seek out produce to shit on. Wtf. Have you never had a garden? Visited one? I'm baffled.
While I'm sure animals don't actively seek to shit on produce (that bed of lettuce sure looks nice to poop on) the presence of animals outdoors, produce growing on a farm, and water runoff put produce in direct or indirect contact with fecal matter. This was the cause of E. coli outbreaks in lettuce, cantaloupe, and tomato crops.
I bet some of these bitches don't lick the brownie/cookie dough spatula. Lol. That being said, i just use water, but i lick the spatula/spoon every damn time.
I'm weird and don't like the taste of batter. Only the finished cookies or whatever.
I'm trying to be careful while pregnant though since something like half of cases of listeria are pregnant women.

They make organic fruit and veggi wash solution. You can get it at Trader Joes or any hippy market. I normally just rinse with water. When my Mom comes over I use the wash.

Ok, so I am finally getting around to reading the Sunday paper. This is actually a question in Hints From Heloise.
Dear Heloise: what is the best way to wash fruits and vegetables?
Dear Jim: Water is all you need. The Food and Drug Administration tells us not to use bleach, produce wash, soap or detergent. Produce should be "washed" using running water while you rub the surface with your hand or a paper towel. Use a vegetable brush if washing potatoes, cantaloupes or other produce with hard skins
