I need some help correcting this with my 3.5 year old. A year ago, we had dinner at a friend's house and she yelled at her dog to shut up repeatedly. Ds1, then 2.5, latched onto that and he still says it. He said it just now to a cashier at the store. I told him it was a rude thing up say and that he couldn't get a sticker. But then he just told ME to shut up. I've tried ignoring it, taking away toys and time outs. I've tried explaining why we don't say that. What is worse, 18m old is starting to copy it. Any ideas to stop this awful habit?
hmmm. I'm not sure. that behavior is one that my harsh tone of "Unacceptable" is enough to bring them to tears and stop.
I would just be very stern and consistent. use whatever discipline seems to work best on your ds whether that be time out or loss of privilege. etc. NEVER let it slide. ever!!!
As I re-read my response I realized it sounds like my kids cry every time I use a stern voice. lol Not the case, but they do know I am serious and not to mess around and it stops the behavior. Occasionally, they would tear up because they thought they were in trouble. Not anymore now they are bigger but they know not to push.
