And Facebook is now blaming the protestors for this, becuase protesting caused anti-police sentiment. Sigh.
"My gut is filled with fury at the execution of the two NYPD officers. This was premeditated murder; an assasination of two innocent cops with families who were just doing their job. Hopefully we've caught or killed the perps. Now every person who protested against alleged police violence has to ask themselves, protestor and official alike, did something I did or said help lead to this? Did I add to the swirl of anti-police hatred that led this scumbag to commit an act of terror? Those photographed screaming in cops faces or those leaders who enabled this vitriol to fester, how do you feel about your rhetoric and your mis-directed fury? 2 cops are dead, what will those leaders and protestors do now?" - Geraldo Rivera
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
Thanks - I misread that on one of the sites. I'm glad she survived, I hope she's ok and that she doesn't have lifelong issues because of the shooting. The whole situation is horrible. That woman and her family, the cops and their families.
I went back to find a source for what I posted, but it appears that it's unclear. Some sources are saying she was murdered, some saying she was shot but not killed. I hope she was only wounded.
Al Sharpton has released a statement on the murders, offering condolences to the officers' families and condemning the violence, De Blasio has not. Embarrassing that Sharpton beat him to it.
Apparently deblasio to finally speak shortly. Let's not forget too that PBA president Patrick Lynch wanted all the cops to sign the petition that if they die in the line of duty they don't want deblasio at the funeral.

Yeah, there aren't very many good options for him at this point. Cops are already furious with him, and I doubt there is much he can say that anyone's going to want to hear right now.
You know what would be really offensive? If someone claimed the cops were dirty and came up with a completely different story than this one before we knew the evidence. And then it came out later that the cops actually were involved in some kind of unrelated crime the shooter knew nothing about and half the country was like "welp, what do you expect?" Etc etc shady grand jury.
Sorry! Basically, the police union has made a number of statements saying that the mayor isn't supporting them and has "thrown them under the bus". It's gotten to the point where there was a statement circulating for officers to sign saying 'if I'm killed in the line of duty, I don't want the mayor at my funeral."
The tension has already been tremendous, and this is not going to help.
I think it is way too early right now to say anything about this guy's motive. We just don't know yet.

Thanks ladies. Keep in mind I am doped up, but if I read that right, he talked about how he had "the talk" with his biracial son, and the union is pissed about that? Team Mayor on that one. However, the article also mentioned they feel he hadn't shown enough support following Eric Garner. I don't know what that means, exactly, and the subject is too sore for me to probe.
The deaths of these officers is heinous and bloody, and now two more families will mourn this Christmas and New Year's thanks to gun violence.

Well, it's a little more complicated than that. As far as his son, it's awkward because he's the mayor of the city and he's saying "yeah I told my son to avoid the police because they're racist." I understand what he's saying, but at the same time, someone in his position saying that, well, it doesn't exactly warm relations with the police department. There's also been a lot of debate over the stop and frisk policy and broken windows policing, with De Blasio saying "I'm going to end it all" and the NYPD saying "You don't know what you're doing because you don't understand anything about policing, you're trying to tell us how to do our jobs, and you're making a huge mistake." A lot of cops feel like he's basically taken sides in everything that's been going on, with the Garner case and everything else, and has more or less said "I'm for the protesters and against the police." They feel like he's pandering to his political base at the cost of relations with the NYPD and supporting the city's cops. And now a lot of them are actively blaming him for stoking the conflict between citizens and the police and for tacitly supporting the rhetoric that (allegedly) led to these cops getting killed.
The tension has been simmering since he got elected, has gotten worse and worse, and now I think it's going to boil over.
Obviously I'm getting a lot of the cop side of this, so I'm just sharing what I'm seeing there.
As I said before, I think we already know what happens when we jump to conclusions based on what someone posted on Facebook. The facts are definitely not out yet, so for now, all I know is that a terrible tragedy occurred, two people just trying to do their jobs are dead, and families are suffering.

This is a very good synopsis, at least from the police viewpoint.
Basically, De Blasio is stuck between a rock and a hard place. Whatever he says or does is going to piss a huge bloc of this city off. And as you said, he wasn't a favorite of the police union while he was running for mayor so it's not like they've suddenly soured on him.
I will also be interested in seeing how Bratton handles this too. He's been the police commissioner under De Blasio AND Guiliani, sooooo...night and day there.

Hmmmmmm. He's on Diane Ravitch's shit list, too, for something similar with education and Common Core. Not knowing the full implications and trying to bulldoze in kind of stuff.
I'm afraid I don't know enough of the backstory on the windows or stop&frisk in NYC, but the son thing reminds me a lot of Obama saying if he had a son, he would look like Trayvon. It feels personal and full of pain, and he's probably made more openly divisive statements for his opponents to rail against. That one just makes me feel sad.
Wasn't love for NYPD on a huge crest after 9/11? What happened?
Man, I hope the new year can restore some peace to this country. And to this world, but I'll settle for this country first.

I am seeing conflicting reports of whether the PBA has denied that they actually sent this out to officers or not.
If it's real, it's bad.
Seriously though, we need to stop with the "you're with us or against us" shit. I don't want police officers breaking protocol to kill unarmed people. I don't want civilians killing police officers.
I'm already sick of the tweets from local politicians accusing de Blasio and protesters of stirring anti-police sentiment. Fuck them. If you want to play that stupid game, how about we blame Daniel Pantaleo for killing Eric Garner? But I refuse to go there because it's a stupid game and this is no time for blaming protesters, police officers who fuck up, etc. What should come out of this is continued discussion about how the police serve their communities. But that won't happen now and I'm so pissed.

This. I don't get it.
It it is a fact that there are bad police officers out there. Period. Are the majority of officers good, yes. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that there are bad ones. Like anything in life, there's going to be good and bad. It's just nature, why should the police force be exempt from a natural phenomenon, simply because they're police officers.
The majority of protestors are not out there saying "eff the police". They're marching for justice against the few bad ones.
Just in my FB feed... the shooter was a converted muslim. That's why we must get rid of all muslims.....
And when we do, we will still have Jared Loughner. And James Holmes. And Adam Lanza. And Eliot Rodger. And Eric Harris. And Darren Wilson. And Dick Cheney. Who will we get rid of then? It won't be white men or guns, that's for fucking sure.
NEW YORK -- The man who ambushed and killed two NYPD cops in Brooklyn Saturday began his day by shooting his ex-girlfriend and making online posts that were "very anti-police," Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said.
Play VIDEO NYPD officers killed in patrol car shooting Baltimore County Police learned that Brinsley had a connection to Brooklyn and had faxed a warning flier to the NYPD, but it was not received until around the same time as the 2:47 p.m. shooting, Bratton said.
"At approximately 2:45 this afternoon, Baltimore authorities sent a fax," Bratton said. "Unfortunately, it was essentially at the same time our officers were being ambushed and murdered by Brinsley."
The NYPD will be working with Baltimore police to determine a motive and what brought Brinsley to New York City, Bratton said.
The suspect, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, wrote on an Instagram account: "I'm putting wings on pigs today. They take 1 of ours, let's take 2 of theirs."
He used the hashtags Shootthepolice RIPErivGardner (sic) RIPMikeBrown.
18 PHOTOS NY police officers killed Around 2:47 p.m., police said Brinsley approached the passenger window of a marked police car and opened fire, striking Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in the head.
The officers were at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
"They were, quite simply, assassinated -- targeted for their uniform," Bratton said.
"This may be my final post," Brinsley wrote in the Instagram post that included an image of a silver handgun. A silver handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting, police said.
Another picture showed what appeared to be blood on a pair of jeans and references to Brooklyn, CBS New York reports.
CBS News could not independently verify that the messages came from the suspect.
Bratton confirmed that Brinsley made very serious "anti-cop" statements online but did not get into specifics of the posts. He said they were looking at whether the suspect had attended any rallies or demonstrations.
Play VIDEO New York Police commissioner says 2 officers were "assassinated" Two city officials with direct knowledge of the case confirmed the posts to The Associated Press. The officials, a senior city official and a law enforcement official, were not authorized to speak publicly on the topic and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Brinsley went to the home of a former girlfriend in Owings Mills in the Baltimore area and shot and wounded her around 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, reports CBS Baltimore. That victim is expected to survive.
Police there said they noticed Brinsley posting to the woman's Instagram account about a threat to New York officers.
"Baltimore County detectives later received information from the victim's mother that Brinsley was posting on the victim's Instagram account," Bratton said.
Criminal records show Brinsley has a history of arrests on various charges in Georgia, including robbery, shoplifting, carrying a concealed weapon, disorderly conduct and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
Bratton said his last-known address was Georgia, but he had some ties in Brooklyn.
Bratton said the department's 35,000 officers will soon be getting new technology that would allow the immediate sending of photos and warnings into the field, CBS New York reports.
The specially outfitted tablets and laptops will go to every officer.
Play VIDEO NY police union head blames mayor, protesters for officers' deaths Hours after the shooting, the head of New York City's police union blasted Mayor Bill de Blasio and those who have recently protested against incidents of police violence.
"There's blood on many hands tonight," Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch told reporters outside the hospital where officers Liu, 32, and Ramos, 40, died.
"Those that incited violence on the streets under the guise of protest that tried to tear down what New York City police officers did every day. We tried to warn it must not go on, it cannot be tolerated," Lynch said. "That blood on the hands starts at City Hall in the office of the mayor."
Lynch and de Blasio have been locked in a public battle over treatment of officers following the decision not to indict an NYPD officer in the chokehold death of Eric Garner in July. Just days ago, Lynch suggested police officers sign a petition that demanded the mayor not attend their funerals should they die on the job.
Demonstrators around the country have staged die-ins and other protests since a grand jury decided Dec. 3 not to indict the officer involved in Garner's death, a decision that closely followed a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict a white officer in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year-old.
Several New York officers were assaulted during a demonstration that drew thousands to the Brooklyn Bridge last weekend, although the protests have been largely been peaceful. Three people have been arrested in the assault; four other suspects remain at large.
Holy shit! A fax though? Really? Am I off base thinking a phone call or something would've been faster? I'm picturing fax machines as being slightly obsolete and maybe it's clouding my view. How tragic. It's just horrible.

But it's easy. That's what the mayor should say. I support you and this was wrong. If the police union doesn't choose to listen, that's on them.
I really really don't have the patience to go back to being quiet about the treatment of Black people over decades because some nutter did a terrible thing. You don't apologize and it's not the fault of people who spoke out that this happened. Progressives need to put on their confrontational big girl/boy undies on and take control of this narrative because I refuse to stand for any Geraldo/FOX nuance-less ignorant spin on what is happening here. This racism conversation finally has legs? Nope. You're not poisoning it. Not today.
