One of my friends posted this (from Occupy Wall St) - under the pic it says, #NYPD supporters show their true colors. The moral bankruptcy of #whiteprivilege #stayclassy.
It's frightening that people think this is appropriate.

I'm seriously losing all hope for America.
We never get to have real conversations about race or class or gender because we always do THIS! No problem with racism because "SEE! Black man killed cops!" No talk about rape because "SEE! Rolling Stone got it wrong!" No talk about class because "SEE! That welfare mom over there has a Lexus!"
You all have people changing their profile pics to the blue and black equality for law enforcement symbol, yes? This can't be just me.
? Like HRC symbol? No. But the blue line over an NYPD badge? Yes, but only by cops and their families, consistent with what they do every time there's a high-profile killing of a cop in the line of duty. (I believe several did so when a K-9 in our hometown was killed by a suspect, too).
See, this is the kind of shit that makes folks of color not trust cops. YOU FUCKERS KILLED SOMEONE AND YOU AIN'T EVEN SORRY!
Obviously not all cops, ffs. I just want to make that clear before someone jumps on me. Not even most cops. But there is a incredibly upfront and vocal minority that's all shruggy about the lives they take. Even when it's justified, that's not supposed to happen. Dude who choked out Eric Garner should be sorrowful. Darren Wilson should be constantly thinking about how he could have responded differently to get a different result. He should be in therapy struggling with the weight of that responsibility.
Instead, too many cops are hanging out in public all loud and shit, shrugging and basically saying act right and I'll care.

I deactivated one of my fb accounts, and haven't looked on my real one. FB can blow me this time of year anyway. I'm not going to put the cherry on top by having to unfriend people.
One of the girls from my high school is crying (she says she's in tears) thinking about how much more dangerous it is out there for LEO now that everyone thinks THEY are the enemy.
The truth is that what just happened makes it more dangerous for *everyone*. Every cop in this country is going to be nervous and on edge when they're out there, and when cops are nervous and scared, I think we all know what happens.
Honestly, what the police union supposedly sent out about having cops have two units for every call and not doing anything but what's absolutely necessary is probably a good idea right now, though not necessarily for the reasons that they said that. At this point, apathy is better for everyone.
I really don't know. I wouldn't be surprised if cops do start following the 2 cars responding and don't do anything but the bare minimum and if they all do it, there's really nothing the department can do. What effect that's going to have on the city, I have no idea.
As far as the mayor, from what I've seen, I don't see how this damage can be repaired. Emotions are running extremely high right now.
Sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but this is such bullshit. Not directed at you writing about it but the mayor's consequences.
He actually took a stand for minorities who have dealt with ALL sorts of injustices and embarrassing treatment of the police for years. Stop and Frisk was a disgusting law. Hardly affecting white people and conversely hugely affecting minorities.
He stands on the side of those who have rights and gives a voice against the horrible injustice of Eric Garner. Since the NYPD wants to run rabid and play god like they can't be touched and are free from reproach, they can say shit like this when they should be standing and supporting justice. They should say how they are against racist and violent cop behavior and that is not who they are. Instead, they're pointing at a mayor who rightfully told his son to take the right precautions in dealing with the police.
If they want to be offended at that, they're taking it out on the wrong person. The mayor didn't create racist cops and racist laws.Their leader Lynch, is being such an ass, he is being the voice and representing the force in this racist crap.
The mayors privileged son has never had to take any precautions dealing with the police. Particularly now with his private security detail. It was a ridiculous thing to say. Having Al Sharpton at his side isn't going to have anyone in NYC with any sense listening to anything he says. Referring to videotaped attacks on the police officers as 'alleged assaults' isn't going to have the police believing anything he says. Having police officers stand in line to be screamed at and spat upon isn't going to do anything to convince them he holds them with anything but contempt.

Why is this a bad thing? Police officers do this all the time. I mean if you did it for everyone it would always be your profile pic since police officer line of duty deaths are up 23% this year.
But how is supporting law enforcement with making the thin blue line your profile pic bad? This sounds like the rhetoric of you can only support one or the other.
Because yes, the people I see doing this do have the attitude that we need to support cops (all cops) and that these shootings justify what they have been saying, which is that the protestors over ferguson and garner are violent thugs - not that ONE CRAZY GUY happened to kill two officers in the wake of a lot of criticism of police practices.
It DOES come off as very one-sided. Like you can only support one side, and the people I see posting are taking the side of cops. It runs me the wrong way. It seems not like support of the officers killed, but more like a fuck you to the protestors, and justification for criticizing them. I'm finding it hard to put into words, but I think taking one side exclusively is exactly what people posting this are doing.

You cannot be serious with this. Just because he grew up with money, it does not mean that DeBlasio's son has not had to extra careful around police. He's still a young black man.
And whatever security the mayor's family gets (does his son really have 24/7 security?), that's very recent.

It likely hasn't been on your radar before but people do it every time and for firemen too. I'm sure more people are doing it now because they feel like cops do need more support now. People are complaining that showing support for the families of people recently killed by the police doesn't mean you can't also support good cops but somehow showing support to cops is one sided? I've seen several cops write that having people thank them while on the street has helped keep them going. I doubt everyone that has thanked a cop is secretly hoping he goes out and shoots someone.
Honestly, what I will never understand is why people who are cops, or have loved ones who are, don't want the bad cops to not have support and why they don't push them out. Why protect them? I think the vast majority of cops are probably good guys/ladies dedicated to their jobs, but the bad ones make the news and what exacerbates the situation - and the us vs. them mentality - is the over the top protection and deification of those cops. It just doesn't make sense to me, because I think you lose more if you protect those cops, but it seems like the attitude among many LEOs and their family/loved ones is that if you do speak out or those cops do suffer consequences for their wrong actions, they lose more, somehow.
Sidenote: I am not sure what is worse, over the top defense of LEOs and the negative comments towards protesters or the complete apathy and indifference among my friends/facebook feed. I'm guilty of this too, I suppose because I only randomly post current event type things and maybe my friends just don't use facebook for that either. But I also know that many of them don't follow things like this at all, and probably have no idea.

Every Black male has to take precautions dealing with the police.

Agreed!
except one thing. The memo that went out wasn't made in apathy. It was made in spite. They talked about the mayor's hands dripping with their blood. So it doesn't have the detached feel that it probably needs to.
Yes, it's everywhere and there are a few variations of it. I've never seen this before with other slain LEOs.
I actually see it pretty regularly, but I am FB friends with a lot of people affiliated with law enforcement.
I see it regularly, anytime an officer does in line of duty even from something like a car accident, but I also know many people who are or are affiliated with law enforcement.
