Got a sewing machine for christmas from my MIL and I'm so excited!
I'm a huge fan of Ravelry for knitting ... is there something similar for sewing patterns? So mostly free patterns, not fully curated, but at least user rated/with user photos?

There really isn't a website quite the same as ravelry. Craftsy is becoming quite popular and has many free and cheap patterns and a large assortment of tutorial classes.
I like the website sewmamasew - There are a lot of awesome tutorials and links to various blogs for clothing, home sewing and quilting.
I don't like crafty stuff too much, but I'm too intimidated to make actual clothes. When I knit I'm the same way, so end up making a lot of scarves, hats and dog clothes.
I think my first project will be a tote bag with some letters on the side because that will help me practice some important stuff without ending up with crap that clutters my house. But it took me FOREVER to find the pattern, etc. which is why I was yearning for something like ravelry.
SewMamaSew is already on my list cos she has cute dog stuff so thanks for that, and I have no doubt when I get going that youtube will be my friend! I'll check out craftsy now.

I use Burdastyle a lot. There are a few free patterns, but most cost $6 or so. And people post photos of their projects which is nice. I really like seeing a pattern on a non model before i buy it.

You might also consider quilting. I personally found that I could buy the little random sewn objects or clothes for much cheaper than my costs and time created. But quilts are expensive! And I am much better at sewing in straight lines, which is really important for quilting.
For sewing projects like a tote, you might find a library book that has what you're looking for as opposed to using a traditional tissue printed paper pattern. Sunset has a lot of volumes with things like totes, pillows, curtains.
I like Dana Made it - www.danamadeit.com/ Go to the tutorials and she has lots of free patterns/tutorials. I also belong to a few facebook groups - search pdf pattern groups, etc. Another one, sew and tell, on facebook.

I've found that I've been getting wrist/joint pain when I knit and that's why I had to stop knitting bigger pieces. It was right at the point that I was gaining some more confidence too.
