My hairdresser uses (I'm pretty sure) a 1inch curling iron with a clip, but uses it as a wand (DOES NOT use the clip). She also only loosely wraps the hair section and holds it for a brief amount of time. This makes a looser wave.
I use curlesque by tigi and scrunch into wet hair. Blow dry on low with a diffuser. Then I scrunch bedhead manipulator into it. Gives it volume and makes it more beachy. Then I spray the hell out of it with tresseme level 3 hair spray and don't touch it all day lol.

I use a Nume Reversi wand for beachy waves. It goes from thicker on one end to skinnier on the other end and I find it gives me natural, beachy waves with minimal effort. There is a learning curve to using a wand without burning your damn fingers, though (at least for me).
Sorry for the extreme close up. I have very thin fine hair naturally curly hair. I use the Instyler and it totally changed my life. It smoothes out the frizz and gives really pretty curls that last all day.

Thanks to this post I just spent $40 on a Hot Tools curling iron and the hair spray that Verona uses in her video. Just take ALLLLL my money already Amazon!
I use a 1" Hot Tools. My hair doesn't like to hold curl though so I have to over-curl it so that it falls into a loose curl. It's curled that way in my avatar pic.

I use a 1 inch barrel and wind my hair around without using the clamp. My hair holds a curl well so I don't use hairspray but I do make sure my hair is 'gritty' to get good volume and hold. I like bumble and bumble sea salt spray or oribe dry texturizing spray.
