Like, they happen to both have the same first name, or like the book/movie makes it a point to say he was named after Nathan Forrest?
I know a Forest from New Hampshire (Connecticut? Someplace northy) who was most definitely NOT named after anyone KKK related so I don't automatically make that connection. His sister is Rain, so it's more nature than hatred in his family. Ha.

It specifically says it in the movie. I have not read the book.
Huh...I never really even thought about it, and I've never heard any controversy surrounding it.
According to Wiki, the other posters here are correct: in the movie, the mom says she named him after their KKK relative to remind him that sometimes we all do things that make no sense.
I've only seen the movie once and I hated it, so I didn't recall that detail without looking it up.

Wow. That's awful. I haven't seen it since it was in the theater where I sobbed through the Vietnam scenes like a baby so I totally missed that.
Yes, it's specifically stated he's named after Nathan Bedford Forrest. I think maybe in the book the character is racist? I haven't read it but I know he's a lot more crude than in the movie.
I'm surprised they didn't change the name origin for the movie.
Why would they? You can't just start changing parts of books for the movie LOL

Tell that to Demi Moore, who changed the freaking ending of the Scarlet Letter. The ending. Of the classic novel. The ending of which is part and parcel of the entire meaning of the book.

That one still pisses me off. I just sat in the theater with my hands in the air staring at the screen like what just happened?
