I nursed all 3 of my kids and they all used a pack from the beginning. My good friends mom is a pedi and she told me she doesn't believe in nipple confusion. SOLD! lol. Just an anecdote, but my kids nursed fine.

One thing I learned quickly as a new mom is that sometimes you just have to do things to save your sanity, even if it's "not recommended." (I'm not advocating for dangerous things just things like pacifiers and whatnot)
My aunt is a nicu nurse. She says babies just like to suck and she doesn't really believe in nipple confusion. She also says you need to do what you need to do to survive!
We offered a paci on day one. In your situation, your finger is doing the same as a paci, so imo it doesn't really matter. Our baby knew the difference between boob, bottle, and paci. If she got a paci and she was hungry, she let you know!
We gave M a paci on day 3. I BF and pump enough for H to do 1 overnight bottle feeding. M has never been confused. I tried to give him a soothie when he was hungry one night while H was heating a bottle and, I swear, it felt like he slapped me in the face for it! My mom was an L&D nurse and she doesn't believe in nipple confusion either.

I second happiest baby on the block. I used a pacifier very early on and had no issues with . If he has a good latch and you both have the hang of it I wouldn't worry about using a pacifier.
