I wonder if it's the three year old I was hanging out with in Maurice's who was crying that she doesn't want to buy presents for people because no one buys presents for her and it's NOT.FAIR!

You are so wrong for this and so am I for laughing at it.

I just read this on FB right before I came here. It makes me so sad that parents don't work on the basics with kids - first and last names and parent(s) names. I know phone numbers can be tough, but at least work with them on the very basics.

That was my thought as well. How does a three year old not know her own last name?

Did she not know it or do the officers not understand what she's saying? Pudding knows his but it's Italian and five syllables. If you don't know what he's saying, you'd never know.

Good point. I'm so curious about your last name now! Five syllables is pretty impressive!
How awful. I wonder if it's possible that something happened to the parents as opposed to her being intentionally abandoned? I wonder if the person who dropped her off was actually her parent.
I do agree that she looks older than 3-- or maybe my 3 year old still looks especially babyish?

This doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I taught 2 kids in K that went by nicknames unrelated to their first names. Not only did neither know their last names, they didn't know their actual first names either!
My mom is a teacher, too, and helps with Pre-K and K on the first day of school. It's not at all uncommon for many of the kids to not know their last names.

The local news station's twitter feed just mentioned that she was reunited with a parent, but no further details other than it's still being investigated.
DD1 is the same age and knows her first & last name and what city we live in. I just asked her if she wanted to learn my phone number and she said "No, I'm not a phone person." Wtf kid?

I agree. DS turns 3 tomorrow and has known his whole name for about 6 months now-he knows our first names, my phone number, and we're working on our address. We've worked on it a lot though. I used to do this exercise with all of my swim lesson kids too, no matter what age. It was amazing to me that a 6 or 7 year old would respond "mommy" when asked what their mom's first name was.
I often wonder though if DS would tell the information to someone though when asked...especially if he's scared.

Team She Looks Older Than Three
DS (three years old) knows his first and last names (and mis-pronounces his last name -- when he says it, it sounds like "lecher", lol). He knows mine and S.O.'s first names, but doesn't know that my last name is different from his.
If you ask him what city he lives in, he tells you the name of his daycare. :?
A few weeks ago I totally spaced what time I was supposed to pick up DD6 from an after school activity, and she told her friend's mom my number so she could call me. The mom told me how surprised she was that DD knew my number; her DS7 doesn't know hers. We've worked on that since about age 4.
I know it's going to take awhile for our phone numbers because he has to learn area code too. DS knows our names now, but people will likely not guess his pronunciation of our last name. He's learning the address.
I'm trying to picture how this story played out with dropping her off with a car seat. Were there no adults watching and chasing the car down when it drove off?

I think it was so busy that people assumed someone was picking her up. It was the valets that called the police and told them what happened.

The Grove is a mess on a regular weekend, so I'm sure it was extra jam packed last night.

DS got separated from us at a holiday event a couple of weeks ago. Not sure if it was more traumatic for me or for him. Anyway, he did exactly what he's supposed to. He found someone who worked there, told them his name, my name, and DH's name. A few minutes after he got away, we heard our names being paged. DS is 4. It seems weird to me that a 3 year old wouldn't know their last name.
