Does croup come on really suddenly? Tonight Henry started coughing a bit, then after he was asleep it kept getting worse. We gave him a breathing treatment, then an hour or so later the cough change and now sounds more dry harsh cough.
He has never had croup before, but it sounds like what I would think a croup cough sounds like.
Looks like instead of seeing his great grandmother tomorrow he will be seeing his pedi.
My poor lil guy.
Update: it's croup. We have steroids for him, hopefully they kick in soon. This puts a serious damper on our Christmas plans but I am trying to just focus on he will be okay and it's not that big of a deal. He loved his sucker from the doc.
Poor guy. For us it did, especially with Violet. No cough at all, then around 10 pm we noticed barking sneezes. By her 2:30 wake up she had a fever, so I called Telehealth and they advised me to take her in then instead of waiting (infant with a fever being the major concern). She got a dose of steroid and I'd say she's no longer barking.
Yes. E has gotten it every year and each time has had a very minor cold then suddenly woken at night with the croup cough and stridor.
The pedi should hopefully give him a side of steroids which in our experience gets rid of the scary cough/ breathing issues right away. The underlying viral issue/cold obviously will hang out for a long time (ahhhh....winter) but the breathing issues are the main thing.
And don't be surprised if the stridor/croup cough is gone in the morning. Still take him in. It's very very common for that to only occur at night (E would be rubbing around in the day like nothing was wrong - he also never got a fever ) but croup is progressive and the 2nd and 3rd nights are usually the worst. It's too late for this now , but I always take a quick video of E's cough at night to show them when I bring him in because he doesn't really do it during the day.

Thank you! This is really good to know. He is asleep now in the living room floor, it was a rough night. I am calling the doc at 8. I am sorry you have had to go through this so many time. It's scary!
How many days until E would feel better? I am trying to manage my expectations about Christmas. The family is going to be so sad if we miss it. Our kids are the only kids.

. For Elliot I always bring him in the next day and he gets a dose of steroids (our pedi gives a pill I just crush up and put in applesauce). After that he has always stopped the croup cough right away. He usually hangs onto a regular cough/runny nose for the usual amount of time. Meaning basically forever. But he goes back to regular sleep and that is what matters! Good luck at the pedi!

Oh I really hope this is how Henry responds. We have an apt at 11:30, listening to that poor cough is so pitiful. Thank you.

Violet's started Thursday night and I'd say she's at about 60% right now. Still stuffy, but less so, and hardly any cough

He might be better by Christmas. Fever for a day or so and the barking cough gets better after 2-3 days. The cough will linger on for a week or two but not that scary bark.

From what I heard, if caught early, the steriods will clear it up so quickly. Two of my nieces were better overnight which is what I'm going to project happen in your home. Good luck to you guys!

Haha, thanks. This is his third time, we have seen the roid rage on Henry before. The first time was when we brought Annabelle home from the hospital, we didn't know if he was acting out from the steroids, or from having a new baby sister.

Glad you got the steroids, send hope they work quickly! If for some reason they don't and he had trouble again tonight bringing him outside into the cold can actually be a big help, too.
The steroids usually help quick! It's the rage that you get instead!
Haha, I will take the rage over the cough! When he had pneumonia he was on roids, and he was so exhausted from several nights without sleep, yet he was hyped up from the medicine. He was rolling around on the floor, it was quite pitiful.

I may try this tonight, I did the steam last night, it didn't seem to help too much though. I didn't take him outside last night. He will be so confused if I do this though. What doing mommy? Dark out here. Mommy what doing?
