Over the weekend, we received a Christmas card from S.O.'s grandmother. It's, um, used. The sender's and recipient's names are (poorly) whited-out.
S.O. thinks it's revenge because she didn't receive her own engraved, hand-delivered by white-gloved messenger invitation to S.O.'s 40th birthday party.
(Back story: I had been planning a 40th birthday party for S.O. for months. Then I lost my job. My parents helped me out with food and drinks, but I was on a limited budget for invitations, and I could either be two short, or have 8 extra, and be over-budget. So, since S.O.'s grandmother always comes with S.O.'s dad and step-mom, I included her name on their invitation. Possibly poor etiquette on my part, but it wasn't like she was excluded from the whole party.)
wawa Thanks! That is one that DH has on the list of possibilities. But the price has been holding us back, this may be the push to just get it. But we get a shitton of meat every year (whole pig/1/4 steer) that we have to come up with stuff to do with it and sausages and keilbasas and brats are a great way to do that.
Oh then hell yes you should get it. I've not tried any other brands, but generally, all metal, stainless removable cylinder, vertical stuffer is what you want. MH was even making noises about upgrading to a 15 lb model, but I don't think that really needs to happen.
Question - when you get a whole pig - how specific can you/do you get on the butchering? And what does the overall price per pound end up at? And do you get the trotters and head, or no? And what do you do with the hams?
(can you tell we've been thinking about getting a whole pig?)
We don't get the trotters and head though I suppose we could if we wanted (but we really don't).
We pay by hanging weight and then there is a nominal fee for butchering (about $0.55 per lb hanging weight). We have a cut list that we can choose from for the various cuts of meat. If you want I can send you a PM with a link to the place where we get our stuff. They have various cut lists you can take a look at (beef, pork, lamb/goat, deer etc.) Looks like they just redid their website and it is much more user friendly than it used to be.
I would have to check out my file at home on the cost because TBH, I can't remember what we paid (it has been almost a year since we last bought a pig and a little over a year since we bought the 1/4 steer). It is very reasonable when you figure the cost of high quality locally raised meats.
I made hot chocolate mix (pro tip: do not put cocoa powder in the food processor) and marshmallows.
Homemade marshmallows are the bestest things ever. AND SO FREAKING MESSY. S.O. had never laughed so hard when he was watching me try to spread it in the pan.

Since I think the HR line of "you don't have the skills we are looking for" was bullshit, I just submitted my resume directly to the hiring individual. Fuck it, it can't hurt, right?

Also, someone please tell me that's is the week of Christmas, and that's why I haven't received any responses to the two dozen applications I sent last week. Three of those jobs sounded like a fantastic fit for my skills and past work experiences, but I really don't want to get my hopes up. Again.

They'll come back on January 2, all ready to hire you.

the people in my department that HR would have to run resumes by are out this entire week and not coming back till after new years. I am SURE it's the same elsewhere.

Rejection? What rejection? LOL.
I totally read this line in Obi Wan Kenobi's voice.
I usually have good self control when it comes to food but I feel possessed by a sugar demon or something and i keep doing cycles of desperately wanting some cookies, eating one or two, and then feeling like a failure. I'm cutting out sugar in January and it cannot come soon enough.. save me from myself, January!!!
Clearly if I want to attend a Christmas get together with friends, I need to host my own. I'm starting to think no one actually likes me, since lots of my friends are having parties to which I have not been invited. Which just feeds my wanting to *not* have a party, because no one would come. Rinse and repeat.

They came out of the pan without too much difficulty, and they are amazing. I am going to make these all the time.
I am kinda stressing out trying to finish a bunch of stuff before my last day next week. I'm really afraid I'm gonna leave a mess for my successor, which is probably a little paranoia talking.

Can you share the recipe? My last attempt was a joke!

It was one of In a Garten's recipes on the food network site. I'll post it tomorrow. They were really easy to make, and I finally got to use my candy thermometer.

Aww. I get caught in this (thought/inaction) cycle too. *hugs*
