I want to surprise DH with a little trip for his Christmas/Birthday present. We would only have two nights to spend anywhere and wouldn't go until end of January at the soonest. The options below are listed in order of cheapest to most expensive. Any thoughts? Any places I'm not thinking of? We thought about a driveable trip, but neither of us want to do Santa Fe/Abq or Denver.
I'm going to vote San diego. I think you would need more than two nights for New York which would be my second option. Plus, San diego is less travel time. You've been to Vegas recently.
I would say San Diego or Santa Barbara. Actually if say Santa Barbara over San Diego. SF and NYC are nice, but the weather is not great in jan/feb/march. Southern California is pretty much always nice. Santa Barbara is beautiful and the wine country around it is fantastic.
Either San Diego or SanFran, don't do NYC or Boston in the winter. Way too unpredictable weather wise. You could not make it due to snow. Or just be really fucking cold in the winter.
No, it's not. Seriously. If you've never been, save San Fran & surrounding areas, for when you have more than 2 nights.
I hear you, but I don't know when that's going to be. Our alone trips are never more than 2 or 3 nights, which is why we end up going the same places all the time - to do all the things it takes us more than one trip!

It was a toss up between San Fran and San Diego, but I picked San Fran. I like to go new places - even for a night or two. You still have time to look at Yelp and TripAdvisor to plan a few things to do. I always love Boston and/or New York, but I agree with everyone else - January is NOT the time to be in the New England area AND you need way more than two nights to do either of those cities.

Fair enough. I still say no east coast, but San Fran was my 2nd choice. You'll have fun, you'll just want to return.
