Whichever treat you use to deliver the medicine, I found that offering it occasionally at a non-pill time helped us. We use peanut butter, but I give her a little bit once a month or so, just so she thinks it's a special treat rather than something to force down medicine with. That way, if there is medicine in it she doesn't know the difference.
Squirt cheese will change your life. Seriously. We've had dogs that would suck peanut butter, American cheese, butter, and every other food item off a pill. Squirt cheese on top of the pill in your palm, and they will beg you for the pill.
H's family has always done this. I didn't believe it was any better than American cheese until I finally tried it with a cat as a last resort. It was like magic.
We use hotdogs for the mutt. He gobbles anything though, so he is very easy to pill. One time, when we ran out of hotdogs, we used cat treats and just alternated the pills with the cat treats. Stupid dog didn't know the difference, he just gulped them all down.
